OK, car, 1979 280zx non-turbo, point-breaker ignition system. Car had a leak, was over heating, put fix leak in it, (I know retarded, but I was outta state on roadtrip an was low on funds.) Car ran fine till it overheated again later that day, filled radiator more, car wouldn't start. Roll popped it, started. So the car will only start if I push-roll-pop it. Got it home, no spark to plugs. Checked coil to distributor spark, non there. Replaced coil thinking that was a problem, no fixin it there, still no power from coil, so I am sure coil is not getting power. Don't have an oHm meter at the moment to test power wire to coil. Any suggestions would be much appreciated. Thanks guys.

first of all, you don't have points, they stopped using spoints and started using electronic ignition when the converted to fuel injection early in production of the 74 model year, you're should have the little black box ont he side fo the distributor, it's the ignitor of sorts and assuming you replaced it with the distributor we can rusle it out, you do have a ballasted ignition system taht just drops the voltage going to the coil

back to the issue at hand, if the car will pop start then voltage to the coil isn't your problem

what happens when you turn the key? does the starter engage and turn the engine?

Thats weird about the points system, because I have the '79 shop manual and it still told me to look for the points system, which in case was run by a rod coming from the crank to the distributor instead of a magnet sensor, weird hunh?! Anyways, I had the distributor pickup coil randomly working. For some reason it was working when I push jumped it. I checked the voltage to it when started an everything was fine, but when I moved the voltage meter to inside the distributor housing an arc jumped from the ignition coil lead wire to the frame so I hooked that up then redid the voltage test an it was all up an down and all over the place, so I replaced the distributor coil pickup an everything works fine! thanks for looking guys!

yeah, the little black box was what was bad. I replaced the main coil first, not the pickup coil, cause i was getting correct readings too is an out of it (sometimes)
