i have pretty heavily searched this now on 2 forums... and am getting 2 different answers.

car: 89 240sx sr20det blacktop.

when the car is in neutral there is a whining sound from transmission. when i put in first and start driving i can here it whining with louder with rpms.... through 1,2, possibly 3rd gear

when the clutch is pushed in the sound goes away:)

now i have searched this and everythread with it has no answer:(

one forum tells me when you push the clutch in and the sound goes away: NOT THROW OUT BEARING

the other says only when you push clutch in and hear whining: ITS A THROW-OUT BEARING.

which is it???

and if it is TOB can i pick one of for an SR20det at my local autozone?

The TO bearing is only engaged when you depress the clutch pedal, therefore the sound should be audible when you disengage the clutch. If you do end up replacing it, get one for a 240sx. The TO bearing is linked to the transmission style, so if you bought one for a FWD SR, chances are it won't work properly.

I have the same prob: brand new t/o brg, clutch out and it whines, clutch in and its quiet.

I changed the transmission fluid last summer and it was bad, real bad with lots of bits in it. I figure its no real stretch to figure its the actual transmission. I remember someone on here rebuilt their sr transmission, if I remember correctly its some input bearing that tends to go. I'll just swap on my old Ka trans next time I got it out.

My trans has been making the same noise, it's NOT the TOB.I've narrowed it down to either gear wear (case hardened surface of the gears is worn off, not very likely), or the input shaft bearing is noisy (probably).

It's just one of the bearings in the transmission, either the front counter shaft or input shaft bearing.

I remember one guy on here had a similiar problem and it turned out to be a cracked front cover in the trans. The part that the TOB slides over and that covers the input shaft. Mine makes this noise too, I hope it's not the bearings, I really don't feel like replacing them....

I had the same situation out of my S14 ka..put a brand new clutch from oreily's in it and soon as i took it out for a drive it was making that noise but i didnt have the transmission prior to doing this so like the other guys are saying about the bearings..it could be that but i put it on the lift and pulled the transmission and greased the tob and it didnt do it for a couple of days and then it started again but i just dont know what it is b/c it does the same god awful noise when it's just sittin still and when u drive it too but its still rolling and drifting so it must not be too much of a major thing other than its annoying
