I think it is worthwhile asking this specific question. Actually two:1. I moved from Virginia to Sacramento. I was able to pass emissions with a little timing playing. I have an 89 240sx with sr20. I have not even tried to take it to smog here in Sacramento. I am sure I will get exceptional answers for this specific place. I have seen a few sr20's on the road. So there have to be a couple of ways to do it without jumping the border. (I was thinking Mexico, ha ha).

2. The other item I am pretty sure of is the visual inspection I believe I will have to endure at DMV due to the fact I brought the car from Virginia. Your inside scoops will be most appreciated.

You're screwed....I'm not joking. Keep it registered in Virginia. Most likely you removed all the emissions equipment when you swapped, so unless you got a complete idiot at the DMV, it will not pass the visual inspection. CA is cracking down hard, so getting it smogged is becoming harder and harder. My SR has no emissions equipment, yet it passes the sniff test no problem. But because of the crackdown, my connection smog shops don't wanna do it anymore, so, I had to pay $450 to get it "smogged".

I hear you. Trust me, I am seeing the hurdles. Unfortunately, keeping VA tags is not an option. You get something like ten days to change over. Unless you have either an address, with family, friends, a P.O. Box, claiming you are just "visiting" would wear out pretty quick. I don't feel like getting that uneasy feeling with a neighborhood cop behind me. I have heard of facing a referee, but would like to get insights from you guys who have had to jump the many hurdles. I know there's got to be a "close" to legitimate way to go about it. Do you guys think if I reinstall the smog equipment, that it would get the visual to pass???? Help!

If you feel lucky, go for it.

I am not sure I have an option. Lucky or not, I am very sure a car out of state MUST be taken to DMV, and have at least the numbers (vin I am assuming) checked out. Just in case it is stolen or something. I will go to DMV personally and find out. Then I will report this here. Then I will have to take car. I have heard from a mechanic that they don't really care about emissions equipment...not their job. But I will report what they do so you guys know exactly. That is if I'm not sent to Cuba first...ha ha. By the way, I have heard you could take it to a "referee", and get stickers (I guess) for it. This may be a can of worms, but maybe one or two of you have experienced this and give me a heads up.

Get your car registered here just to save yourself headaches because if they find out your car has been here for so much time and you still have your VA plates then you'll be getting a fat ticket.

The SR will not pass visual at all and there's really nothing you can do about it for now. You'll either have to get a KA or put you 240 as non operational and keep it as a track car, but it has to be tailored everywhere.

Sure there's people who drive SR's out in cali, in fact they're all over, me being one, but it's just a risk you have to take. If you get caught with it don't even sweat about getting it towed UNLESS you were caught racing or doing any type of illegal activity in or with the vehicle.

Cali's not as bad as people make it seem.

Assuming your car looks fairly stockish on the outside and you drive with respect and basically drive like your grandmother would lol then you shouldn't have to have much fear. But there are some cops out here that are just anal.

Hey, thanks for your opinion. I wish I could hear from someone who moved to Cali with an sr20. I do agree about the everyday driving. Nice and slow, unless you are safe enough to have a little fun, (or there's a Cali idiot who cuts you off, ha ha). I let the stupid driving to the young ones. I've been there and paid my dues. I think we should all rally for engine swaps, considering most any engine can be made to run clean, or meet their requirements. I don't see the problem. I appreciate the tips. I don't know what happened to my question about the body shop in Sacramento, but I hope to find out. I will share my experience about the emissions as it comes.
