Ok,

Next oilc ahnge is comming up soon, I'm going redline in my 350..I ran it in my old 300ZX and my S13 with great results.

Here's the question:

I currently have 5 Quarts of Shock Proof Heavy Gear oil, can I use this in my diff or transmission? If Not, which can I run it in (if any) or what would be the better choice (shock proof preferred by myself...)

I am going to run 5w30 for the motor oil.

specs are at http://www.redlineoil.com

Fred, this has you writen all over it

i wouldnt, but thats because synthetic will void your warentee on your transmission. i immagine it would be just fine in the diff.

I would thinkas long as its GL-5 certified or whatever that it wouldn't void the warranty..I may call Nissan Tomorrow and make sure though.-CHet

They stated the synthic oil was allowing the syncro to slip on its brakeing suface and not perform as designed.

well, there's several types of synthetic fluids, and not all are GL-5, etc..and some have a friction modifier that is known to be good for LSD function, but not synchromeshes....

bleh. GOod info, thanks..I'm going to have to do more research...-CHet

yup, exactly. redline puts frictional modifiers in their manual transmission synthetic oils so the synchro's can do their job.

thing is, nissan will view all synthetics as just that.

The reason for this policy is they are painting with a broad brush knowing the majority of syn oil will be the wrong rating GL5 vs GL4.Some syns do carry the rigth rating ( GL4) but most are GL5.

Gl5 + Nissan transmission = Kaputt

As for the motor oil, Redline 10w-30 is VII free, always a better choice than the 5w-30 unless in a northern winter ( tho 5w-30 is a better summer oil than some thicker ones still as a good habit to get into the 10w-30 will run just ever so slightly cleaner due to lack of VII)

So if I had proof it was a GL4 apprved/rated oil, it would not void my warranty?

Sweet.

I'll get some redline 10w30 for my Z in a week for the oil change.

THanks for the input!-Chet

1) I wouldnt rely on that ebing sufficient, some places have denied warranty based on intakes..

Technically you are using the right spec oil, but it may not matter if there is a policy letter out, even if the reasoning for it is too general

Abosultely.Dealers respect redline and Nissan recommends in all but deep freezing temps ( they only have the 5w-30 marked as "preferred" for "all temps"cuz their cars get mpg/EPA tested with that fill, but for all but very cold temps 10w-30 and 10w-40 is recommended)

Cool. Fred, should I not be able to obtain redline in short order, would Mobil 1 10w30 be a good sub? You had mentioned somehtinga bout Mobil and the VQ35DE earlier..

I'm running Redline all around. Noticed a very nice difference running the MT high temp transmission fluid. Also nice knowing my engine is getting the DOM P of fluids.

Definetely worth using the best.

I assume you're talking about the MT-90? Both the MTL and MT-90 are GL-4 for nissan, etc..but the MT-90 seems to be better suited in its service description for higher/harsher temp conditions.

Also, it would appear that the redline shock-proof heavy would be the oil of choice for my diffy...any thoughts?

I have a Z32 300zx with 5 speed and have run the gamut with the gear oils. I tried Mobil 1 75w 90, Amsoil 2000 75w 90, Valvoline Syn 75w 90, Redline MT 90 and Royal Purple Max Gear 75w 90. The RP works the best and fixed some 2nd and 4th bearing noise that others did not. The RP is rated for GL4 and GL5 and discussion with the chem engineer at RP factory the oil is absolutly ok for the synchromesh transmission as well as the hypoid rear end. I have been using it for 1.5 years now and it far exceeds any of the others in quiteness and shifting. Go to the Royal Purple web site and read about it.

I suppose the 350z transmission will respond well to the RP
