someone told me that older engines should use much heavier oil because the engine is so "broken in" i have been useing 5w 30 mobil 1 synthetic, my engine is a 1992 ga16de with 170k if this is true what should i be useing?

You're fine. The only real reason to start running a heavier weight oil would be to avoid leaks, as the extra viscosity would help that.

Your manual says 5w30, keep using it. If you're concerned, switch to a high-mileage oil. Mobil1 makes one in both organic and synthetic if I'm not mistaken.

Anothe reason to run a higher viscosity oil would be hotter climates. You can run 5w30 during the winter months since cold starts up are very harsh on any engine and less friction would help. Summer time you can run 10w30, because engine temps will run hotter and you don't want the oil to break down.
