Late 90's Blacktop with 5spd in an 89 coupe. External BOV. Oil catch can.

I changed my oil and I might have overfilled it by 1/3rd quart.I have LOTS of oil blowing out of my BOV and I have hesitation. My oil catch can has a lot of oil in it. I unplug the oil catch can(empty it) and a bit of smoke stays constant out of it.

Are these issues directly related to over filling it? I checked my oil level cold and it shows a little below full. But still does the same while driving.

I don't have a compression tester or I would have that info. Where can I borrow one(Autozone, etc.)?

stop driving if at all possible. you need to do a compression test and/or check the turbo. there is a good possibility your turbo has wasted its seals. trace the oil back through the system and see if its coming from the turbo.

There is very little smoke coming from exhaust. I can see the oil coming from the valve cover breather lines going into catch can, then intake tube.

I've had a turbo seal go out before and it smokes like crazy, especially at idle. This doesn't.

What could be damaged in the head causing alot of oil to be pushed into the breather lines? Valve guide seals? Guides themselves?

the catch can should be catching the oil, make sure it isnt full or anything

yeah, i have seen turbo seals go out and they usually smoke out the exhaust. i understand that the compressor side seal can blow too and it would cause the oil to go into the intake piping instead of the exhaust.

yeah turbo is fine. Number one cylinder is at 85-90 compression and the rest are all over 140 compression. I don't know if it is through the rings or one of the valves, or guides for that matter. My exhaust does smoke now, as I unhook the catch can from the intake tube and just put a filter on it.

ouch, i had the same probs. my cyl four had 80psi warm cranking compression. check out the pics...http://www.nicoclub.com/zerothread?id=91918if its blowing oil by then the chances are that its a ring issue. valves will kill the compression but to be blowing oil out the breather it would have to have a burnt valve(for low compression) and bad valve guides(to blow into the valve cover). more likely a ring problem.

that wouldnt explain the oil through the bov though...

yes, the intake side can blow out, it makes a big mess inside your piping and ic

and chris: im suprised that all you lost was some power

me too. i drove it to my moms house to start taking it apart and it felt fine just down on power. then i take her apart and found that mess. whew, amazing it could be like that without making noise or anything.

your right, that would not explain oil coming out the bov unless the breather was routed back into the intake which i assume its not. must be a turbo.
