Nissan Filter and Mobil 1 full synthetic tend to be the top picks, it's what I run

I too run a Nissan filter and Mobil 1 synthetic oil. Do you currently have conventional oil or synthetic oil in your Z?

If you switch to synthetic, I would do a "break-in" period. After your first oil change with synthetic oil, change the oil again 1k miles later. After that, change the oil again 2k miles later. Then after that, change the oil again 3k miles later. I believe (and many others do too) that this helps "flush out" all the conventional oil.

i know this is going to sound really stupid, but do i have to change the oil filter every time i change the oil during the break in period?

yes change the oil filter...i highly recommend 10w-30 valvoline v-max.. it will extend the life of your cam seals. which is a costly replacement to pay for. also running anything higher than 10w-30 in the vg boggs it down ....this is coming from personal experience....good luck

^^^ I have never really liked Valvoline. The only oils I would put in my Z are Mobil 1, Amsoil, and Royal Purple.

Do not use 20W50 unless you plan on racing in EXTREME heat. The recommended oil is 10W30.

about 18 years ago i started following jd power testing. since the internet started to boom it was easy.

valvoline was one of 3 oils that came out with near zero wear on parts. on some extreme testing. the other 2 i can't remeber. and i know it's been there time after time at the top.yes that was many years ago for all i know they gone to sh**.... but old habbits are hard to break

i use castrol high milage on my s13(173k) and my Z32(141K). ive usually seen if u switch to synthetic from conventional u develop oil leaks cuz regular oil has built up around the seals, and synthetic breaks it down, thus creating the leak.

But that also means that you should have replaced that seal anyways.

not if you keep using conventional oil or stuck w/ synthetic from the beginning

I switched to synthetic when my Z had 135k miles on it, and I have yet to have an oil leak.

I have been told by many techs that the only reason synthetic oil "causes" leaks is because the oil is thiner than conventional oil and will make its way through any opening, it doesn't actually eat through anything..... Just what i have heard, as i just got my 92 TT with 95k and i am going with synthetic even though i don't know what was used in the vehicle previously.

The biggest reason synthetic oil causes leaks is because it actually cleans all the gunk that has built up in the seals. Once that gunk is cleaned out, the seal might not seal as well.
