I am a new owner of a 92 Q45. Not only is the sunroof off track, (see other thread) but I should probably change the oil.

Is there a reccomendation synthetic vs ordinary? Somewhere I read a mixture was preferred. Any opinions?

We all like synthetic if you can swing the cost. Stay with the higher viscosity in AZ, I use 15W50 here in CA.

Most important thing about oil is to change it every 3 months regardless of mileage.

Full synthetic is less likely to burnoff between changes.

"Full synthetic is less likely to burnoff between changes."

Full synthetic is less [volitile] likely to evaporate off, than tier 1 or Hydrogenated tier 2 base stock conventional oil.......when it vaporizes it then goes into the PCV system and then burns...............conventional oil can lose 10-15% volume in 3,750 miles.......0.6-1.0 quart, synthetics lose less than half this amount at 212-230F.

Synthetic -- an extra $10 now saves you $1000 later. You've heard about "penny wise pound foolish." I use Valvolene full synth.

Pretty hard to suddenly be nice to a 12 year old car [made in 91] that has been abused in who knows how many ways.Always have the real hot oil pressure measured with a gauge [with brand new conventional 10w-30], that will tell you what you need to do about oil......type and viscosity for the future!

OK then, tons of help and I thank you all.

Now, where are those spark plugs?

Here we go again....in the heads, under the coil packs. Do a search or consult your mini maunual. Use only OEM NGK.

Do a search on sparkplugs.

FWIW

Mobil 1 10-30 full synthetic is on sale at Sams Club right now. I think I paid 23 bucks for a 6 pack this weekend.

That's the every day price I see. I think there is a 10-50W also for the same money.

Is it still 3000 miles between changes using synthetic?

I also saw Mobil 10-30 at Costco, $23 a six pack here in Tucson.

The syn oil never goes bad under 6-10k, just dirt and additive deplention which are a variable function with each engine [mileage previous care].

Try changing just the filter at 3,000 miles then get an oil chemical analysis some can go to 6,000.......really a function of particle size and count. The TAN will always be good with Synthetics.

What is an extra $50-$100/yr for oil in the big scheme of things.

It is not 3,000 miles but every 90 days even if you do 6,000 or 2,000 miles in 90 days.
