I just got my engine block from the machine shop today. Brought it home, and I was in the middle of putting the crankshaft back in and about to plastigage. I looked down, and noticed my oil squirters were missing so I looked in the box of stuff he gave me of the stuff he pulled off of my engine.

Sure enough, the oil squirters and bolts were in there. My question is this - what do they need to be torqued to? Also, they can turn about 5 degrees in either direction with the bolt in just not tightened down - how do I "aim" them correctly? I checked the FSM under the lubrication and cooling section but it does not mention the installation of the oil squirters.

Can anyone help me with this? Assistance is much appreciated.

When I installed mine, I torqued them down somewhere between 25-30 ft-lb. Also, to position them, I just made sure the little arm with the tab fit in the block as intended. I think I just tried to make sure the little tab was centered and I haven't had any problems.

The tab will lock itself against the side of the hole in the block by that tab when you torque it. Really simple job, only thing you can do is drop the squirter or the bolt. Torque to FSM specs.. Im not sure 25-30 ft pounds is right, that seems tighter than i remember it being. Cant find my freaken fsm on my HD's now for some reason.

I'll second what he said. 25-30 isn't going to fall out, think I did 25. As long as it's in the divot, it's where it should be.

PS - I just checked the FSM for you and couldn't find it either.

thanks folks, i love this forum. My project thread so far is in the 240sx general forum if yall wanna look and see what's gone on.

I torqued to 20 because I know they're brittle. I'll add another 5lbs tomorrow. They didn't feel like they would move too well :P

35 NM per FSM directions. I never torque to foot pounds, always NM as i usually am working on imports. So make that 26 foot pounds, and your within FSM spec. You gotta remember those little damned things are just cast aluminum.

By the way, you should probably get your torque wrench checked out. Call your machine shop and see if they have a torque gauge for wrenches, a lot of them do. I had my buddies Snapon 3 year old 1/2 torque wrench checked, the same one hes been building motors and storing in its case for years, and it was 15 FT pounds to high. I used it, knew something was wrong, had it checked out. It cost me a 90 dollar set of Crower rod bolts.. My craftsmen TQ wrench is working great still, after some abuse too.

Where was that in the FSM?

An autozone near here has a torque gauge and my craftsman microtork was spot on. Craftsman is the only thing I trust nowadays :P

It is in the EM section under Cylinder Block. The picture of the block, the crank, girdle, flywheel, oil pan, ect. Look closely.. Number 7.

In the USAF we had or "Q" wrenches checked every 6 months or every time it was dropped. Obviously things were a tad more strict since it's aviation...but I've seen them fail several times. One time it failed and we snapped a bolt off INSIDE the mast extention of the main gear box of a Blackhawk. Thats the transmission that's hooked to the rotors. Couldn't get it out, cost us 400,000 for a new gearbox.

But better the 400k vs having the gearbox unass itself inflight

And since we're on torque wrenches... don't forgot to reset it to it's lowest setting (or whatever is recommended at time of purchase) and that will make it last a lot longer and stay more accurate.

If i was the mechanic doing that i would feel like the biggest as$hole ever. Thats crazy though, damn. I could only imagine if it had simply stretched the bolt or half broke it, holy ish..
