Next week I'm going to be doing an oil change on my Q, and am wondering whether or not to start using a treatment on the system. Either Slick 50 or Dura Lube are the first ones that come to mind, so I thought I'd ask here and see if anyone's had experience with either and whether there's any particular type of treatment (or none at all) that would be better for the car.

At the same time, I'm also needing to decide if there's a particular oil I ought to be using. I know the car hasn't been running on a pure synthetic previously, so if I switch, it's my understanding that I'll need to run 50/50 for a few months. I used Amsoil in my previous car, and that seemed to be a very good product for the oddball Miller Cycle engine in my Mazda Millenia S. Lots of miles, stayed nice and clean.

Mobil 1 synthetic, no additive required.

The best oil is clean oil.

Save your money. Just use a good quality oil (Mobil 1 is fantastic) and change it religiously.

Additives are crap.

Any oil additive you cna buy over the shelf isnt going to be worth anything... BG makes an oil additive that if you want to use it you can, but its not necessary...

I use regular castrol conventional oil and change every 3-4 months regardless of mileage, but i very rarely see 3000 miles in 3 months..

Well stated. Any SM rated dino oil will suit you just fine. I personally use Mobil Clean 5k and change my oil every 5k miles. Synthetic is a waste of money if you are changing every 3k. Synthetic (any brand) is great, but you DON'T have to use it. I have 201k on my engine using dino, syn blend, and synthetic (only used once). I buy whatever is on sale to stock up on my oil and oil filter stash.

I have been using Mobil 1 Synthetic only because I get it for free by redeeming points at Mobil stations and use an oem oil filter. Most important thing is not to think it's ok to change fluid at later intervals because you're using synthetic. If you use regular oil, you'll be fine too if you change on time.

Regarding additives, I prefer Liqui-Moly. In the US they are known as Lubro Moly. It's a German product that I had a lot of success with.

There are many products in Liqui Moly's lineup. Here is a link to the website:

I especially like the Jecton Fuel Injection Cleaner and Ventil Sauber Valve Clean.

Fresh oil is the best oil. Synthetics will give you a wider performance envleope (not extended OCI!). I buy M1 filters form Joe at great a price fo rVH41DE, still have original specification filters for VH45DE. Do not use the thimble sized filters designed for the VQ30DE they sell you now.
