Is there any way to really tell if a car was run with synthetic oil or just plain ol oil?

The reason for my question is i just got a 05 350z a couple days ago and the dealership i bought the car at has no clue what was used in there. I am changing all the spark plug and oil and everything and I really don't want to screw anything up by using the wrong oil so dose anyone know any tricks to figuring out what was run before?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I figure i will post this in gin pop to get everyone in on the question and help. i know the Z section isnt very active right now.

Use synthetic if you want.

There isn't a "wrong" oil.
I started using synthetic on my 240sx after I bought it with 160k miles on the clock.
No problems.

Just put synthetic, better for your car. But remember once you go synthetic you could never go back.

You can go back to non-synthetic if you want.

I generally run synthetic in both my Civic and my Q45. In both cars I've been short on cash when it came time to change the oil and put conventional oil in. When It was time to change that, I went back to synthetic. Never had any problems.

Cool

Thanks for all the response. I was always told not to go back to conventional oil after using synthetic. i plan on running it anyway but i just wanted to make sure.

Do you think i should flush it anyway just to make sure?

Synthetic+Regular oil blends are commonly sold, so I wouldn't worry about it.

Lots of correct answers in here. You should run 50/50 convential and synthetic before you run full synthetic. My opinion, I would use Pennzoil convential. My father has used pennzoil since his car was brand new with 21 miles on it. The whole inside of the motor is a gold color all where the oil has been. Looks really cool and clean!

In that VQ you should go with what is recommended. Probably anything 5w-30. A tune up will really help with any problems. And if you have any leaky seals, running synthetic will make them leak more, of course! Just a heads up.

Post some car pics!!!!!!!!!!

Supposedly, the synthetic oil are better cleaners, and will clean the gunk that was clogging leaky cracks on bad seals.

I still went with synthetic, and slowly replaced all the seals that were bad since they are going to leak or leak worse down the road anyways, synthetic or not.
There aren't many things to leak on the KA, plus the seals are cheap.
Front main seal, rear main seal, oil pan, and the valve cover gasket is all I can think of, though I don't think the oil pans leaking are a common thing.

The rear main seal and the oil pan are the only tricky ones to get to.
