I finished putting the motor back in the car, I did the head gasket, timing belt and water pump... Thinking the oil pump was solid (only 89,000km) I left it as my budget was tight for this repair. Low and behold, after 10km of less than spirited driving my oil dummy light came on and the car started making valvetrain noises. I promptly turned the car off and go a tow home... I removed the oil feed line, disconnected the ignitor and turned the car over to check for oil pressure... Nothing came out of the feed line. I then removed the oil filter, turned the car over and sitll no oil came out... for a sanity test, i drained the oil, tossed fresh oil in, turned it over... nada.

I need to remove my oil pan to check if my oil pickup is blocked, my thoughts are to lift the motor off the mounts, unbolt the lower bellhousing brackets, remove the oil return line and unbolt the pan.

Does anyone have a better idea for checking the oil pickup or an easier way to remove the pan?

You can try to do it that way, but from my experience, it's a royal pain in the butt trying to bolt the pickup back on while you're messing with the oil pan. I always drop the subframe. It's really not that much work.

Thanks float... I never thought of that!

I will support the motor and drop the subframe/sway bar and support the steering rack.

Wicked idea! =D

If you're doing this on a lift, build a support that goes across the engine bay with feet that rest on the edges of the engine bay, inside the fenders. Then have a chain that supports the motor.

If you're doing it on the ground, or jack stands, put something under the Transmission.

My brother has a shop but it's 45mins away... I had a USDM S13 w/CA18DET at his shop and it was a pain in the a** to travel 1.5hrs in total each day I wanted to work on the car... I work faster at my own pace on my own time =D

I'm winterizing the wrx and tdi this weekend, the silvia stay's idle for another week before i build my support and drop the front sub-frame.

I own a bungalow (ranch) style house and don't have wide enough access to my backyard to build a garage! I'd love to build my own though!

I bought an electric two post lateral support hoist for my single car garage (it's tall enough) but didn't install it... It sat for a few years and I ended up selling it.
