I picked up this '92 Coupe, and I'm starting to think the problem isn't as bad as i was originally told. (the deal was impossible to pass up...i traded an '88 Celebrity that i paid $100 for and invested an additional $100 in plus the previous owner who is a good friend and co-worker said he would help me do the body work needed over the summer)
I was told that they thought they spun a main bearing and that the engine needed replaced.
The symptoms were that it just started smoking (white smoke) while he was driving it once, and the engine started clattering some while driving.
I had to move the car the other day, and when i started it up it didn't smoke, but rattled some so i thought it may have no oil at all in it anymore. I check it, and instead of the 3 7/10 quarts it's supposed to be, there has to be at least 5 quarts of oil in there
He tells me that "The low oil pressure light kept coming on, so i assumed the oil was low and added oil"
So anyways, i'm thinking that maybe the oil pump could be bad?
Is there any way to check the oil pump or no? What else should i be looking for to see if that might be it?
If that is it, I work at Autozone and can get one for about $70. Does anyone know of anywhere else that sells them, or maybe a high volume pump for a little less than that?
It seems like it's going to be a fairly easy fix, just take the oil pan off, undo a few bolts, make sure the distributor is in the right place, & cylinder 1 is at TDC, and then bolt the new one on. Please let me know if I'm wrong, and there's more to it than what i'm thinking.
Thanks in advance
