Hi, I'm new here, and I've got a '98 I30 with 135K miles. I bought the car used and it's done very well for me to this point, but my mechanic informed me two weeks ago that my oil pump needs to be replaced. He's implying that it's going to be ridiculously expensive. Has anyone else had to repair this? I've had to put 7 quarts of oil in it in the last 6 days, so this is now a needs-to-be-dealt-with issue.

I wouldn't think it's all that expensive...?

Considering you have to remove the front cover, it will probably be ridiculous in the amount of labor charged. The actual price of the parts involved won't be bad.

Here is the section of the FSM on Lubrication and Cooling. The oil pump can be found on page LC-5. http://www.nicoclub.com/FSM/maxima/1998/LC.pdf

I finally went to the dealership to have it checked out and they replaced the oil filter -- apparently that was the source of the gushing oil. At the same time, they told me the engine is riddled with little oil leaks and it would be $3500 to repair it all.

Thanks for the website, though.
