FSM has a pretty good write up.

Is the engine out of the car or in the car?

Night and day difference interms of how difficult it is.

yeah you are going to either have to drop the sub frame or lift up the engine high enough for you to get the upper oil pan out

As much as I would love to tell you you are right... The short and painful answer is no.

In order to remove the oil pump, you have to remove the upper oil pan, which will not come out of its place unless you either 1) drop the subframe or 2) unbolt the engine mount and lift up the engine high enough (might still not give you enough room). You will see what I mean when you attempt this. This is why changing out the front cover is a big ***** if its inside the car. Also why, I ALWAYS recommend people to pop in a new front cover BEFORE the swap.

Also, you might (will) damage the part of your HG that goes between the front cover and your head. It is ultra tight there and when you go to put your front cover back on, it might (will) ruin the HG. But since this is not crucial to sealing of block and head, you might be able to get away with it. It's a big pain to get it to not crinkle when you try to put it in.

good luck and make your FSM your best friend.

Truer words were never spoken about the FSM

the easy way to not tear up the front portion of your head gasket is to remove the oil pump spacer from the front of the crank. Now you'll have some wiggle room with the front cover and can put it on without any worries of ripping the HG. the biggest pain in doing it this way is that you have to properly line the inner gear of the pump up so you can slide the spacer back in. It's a lot of trial and error to get it back in, unless you're just really really lucky.

i was checkin out the fsm and didnt give me much info on taking the oil pump off. all they showed was to remove the front bolts and that was it. Well they were showing how to take the timing chain off and they had to remove the head so the front timing cover didnt seem to be a problem. They didnt say anything about removing a upper oil pan. I really dont want have to remove the head just to get the timing cover off.
