Hi guys, well heres the problem. I have a 1990 Q45 with 168K mi on it. Im in the process of doing the chain guides, chain, tensioners etc for the first time. My problem is when I took everything apart I noticed the sprocket for the oil pump on the crankshaft is free spinning but still driving the oil pump. The sprocket has a key way in it but I havent found the key for it. Does this sprocket have a key to lock it in with the timing chain sprockets or the crank pulley? Or does it get locked in by compression of the crankshaft pulley being tighten at 275 ft lbs of torque?

Advice and knowledge is greatly appreciated.

Rich

We have a winner! Compression/friction turns it. The keyway is only to get it on the crankshaft.

Daedalus- Thanks for the quick reply. Its good to know I didnt drop the key in the oil pan, or lose it.

Another question- Will the oil pump typically run the life of the car? Has there been any cases in which the oil pump fails shortly after 170K miles. Ive been searching and it seems like the only time the oil pump is replace is when the plastic guides gets lodged up in it causing it to break. Is it wise to have it changed out now while the front cover is off or is it a waste of money? There doesnt seem to be anything wrong it except the timing chain wearing into the oil pump in a small spot. The spot that wore into the oil pump isnt major at all.

Tough call on that one. Are you doing the chains/valve covers? I think you have to remove the driver's side chain to get the oil pump out, right? If it was me, I probably wouldn't do it as long as the oil pressure was fine. Was one of the guides broken? Scary if the guides are fine and you're still getting wear on the pump. The new guide design should solve that.

Daedalus- Yes Im doing everything, Chains/ guides, reseal the valve cover. The driver side chain guides were broken in 5-6 pieces but all of the pieces were in the location its supposed to be in. None of it fell into the oil pan or got caught anywhere else. It seemed like the oil pressure was fine but I didnt get a chance to hook up a gauge to it. My concern is How long will it last once i put everything back together. This is one thing I dont want to do for a second time. With 168K mi now Im hoping it will last until 300- 350K miles If i do everything now. Im sure its ok but there's that "what if" in the back of my mind.

Well, if you're removing the valve cover anyway, then yeah, might be a good idea in order to get another 150k or so out of it.

Might as well replace it while you're in there - but I've never heard of a failure except (as you mentioned) as a result of a guide failure.

Thanks for the reply Heath. I guess its a good idea to repace it for added insurance.
