Hi guys. Does the oil pump gear that goes on the crank use a key to hold it in place? After putting on the timing gears I dont see how the oil gear could be positioned to use a key. It does have a slot in it as if it were supposed to but I cant find any evidence of it using one in the FSM. Am I to understand it simply gets compressed between the timing gears and the crank pulley? That doesnt sound like a good idea to me. What happens if the pulley gets loose? Anyway, thanks for your feedback.

The gear does not use a key because under very cold crank the ultra high back pressure could break such a key way or the chain.Heck the chain stretches enough with this protective slip. The starter has so much gear reduction torque.

Why one changes the oil chain at the 100k chain guide replacement process and at intervals there after, whenn ever it stretches too much and starts to flop around.

Why crank pulley tension is so important. Those not understanding the high bolt torque requirements have been responsible for many failed engines from low non existent oil pressure.

Since one changes the front crank seal every 70-100k anyway [leaks] you get a chance to retorque the bolt.

Thanks for the info. Very interesting. BTW where do you find all this information? Is this sort of stuff documented somewhere where normal people can get to it?

Almost everything I know about Q is from FSM, Factory Bulletins, THE WEB, and speaking to experts at SAE meetings, The Tire Society, outreaching to other experts at big corporations: Nissan, JATCO, Michelin, Delphi, Toyota and of course asking and watching EXPERT TECHNICANS. Owning one for 15+ years and servicing it of course. Spending $30,000 + on parts/services not counting my LABOR.

My graduate Engineering education helped understand the complex math and electronics. My MBA helps with the financial/strategic aspects.

Having survived 58 years and owning sporty fast cars for 40 helps.

Google is your friend however learning to formulate the ADVANCED search query takes a few hundred thousand tries. Most really useful things are in PDF/PPT/PS format! There are books written on HOW TO USE GOOGLE!http://www.google.com/corporate/history.html
