It will be much kinder on the starter if you remove the plugs too, that way the engine will turn over much easier. Don't crank for more than 30 seconds max at one time, or you run teh risk of burning out teh starter. Let it sit for a couple of minutes between cranks to give the starter a chance to dissipate some heat.
Make sure you have oild pressure, don't just assume you do because you cranked for a while. Mechanical oil pressure gauge is teh best. you should see at least 20psi on teh gauge when cranking, and you'll actually hear the speed of the cranking slow down as the oil pressure starts to build.
BTW.. you won't get oil squirt out of the oil filler cap. But if you look into the valve cover through the oil filler hole you'll see oil squirt onto the cam lobes.
