Hey everyone, I am new here and from Australia. I was not sure wether to put this question here or in another section like the Nissan Mechanic one so I will give it a go here.

I have a CA18DET I have put into a non nissan vehicle. To do this I had to cut the sump and revrse it so the hump is at the back and the oil pick up is as well.

This is what it looks like.

I finally got the car started up and running but the lifters are a little noisy so it has me worried I have no oil pressure. What is the easiest way for me to check there is enough oil pressure getting to the lifters?

I could also be dreaming as the car has no exhaust and its quite loud so it may just be a combination of everything but I would rather be safe than sorry.

If the engine has has been stored sideways, the lifters can drain, and it can take a while for them to fill up, especially if they've seized from sitting on a pallet for too long.

You'll need to pull off the front covers, including the front pulley, and remove the cam covers and cams.

The hydraulic lifters are easily pulled out with a strong magnet. Clean them up and refill them with engine oil. Number some plastic bags and put them back in the same holes once you've cleaned them up.

Will take you a day I reckon.

If you are worried about oil pressure, do you have the oil pressure sender connected? does it work? In my Datsun 1200 I use an A12 oil pressure sender on the CA18.

Cheers,Chris

Sounds like a mission. I have the oil sender connected but I dont think its working correctly as the light never comes on.

Is there any other way to get oil in there by just taking the rocker covers off etc or does the whole top need to come apart? I have never taken the cam off and dont like my chances with getting the timing right.

I might also check the oil pressure just to be on the safe side,

No.

for the lifters to come out, the cams need to come out,for the cams to come out, the front covers need to come off,for the front covers to come off, the pulley must come off,so that you can line up the 3 pulley marks for the timing belt.

To test the oil pressure sender, use a multimeter checking continuity to earth. Should give continuity with no oil pressure, and give no continuity when it has oil pressure.

If that works out ok, then disabling the ignition or fuel pump, removing the oil filter, and cranking for a split second will tell you if you are getting oil into the oil pump from the oil pickup. But you really shouldn't have to go to this length.

take the feed line off the turbo to check for oil pressure

I think I will take the feed line off and make sure it has oil pressure first and check there and then take the oil filter of and check there as well before I start stripping the head etc.

How much oil should come out of both when I am just cranking the motor as a rough guide to ensure there is enough pressure?

Okay sounds good I will check the continuity out this evening.

Not sounding dumb but multimetres are new to me, which prong do I put where?

At a guess it would be Negative to Earth and Positive to the connection point of the oil pressure sender and then set the multimeter to OHMS?

Feel free to shoot me down if I am wrong!

Remove the oil sending unit and install an Oil Pressure Gauge in its place to determine if oil pressure is within specs. I suppose checking the sending unit with a multimeter would help aswell.
