Hello,

I have been toying with the idea of adding an oil cooler to my 91 240sx but I had a few questions and some of the answers I got where a little vague:

First of all, if I add a filter relocation kit AND an oil cooler, will the stock oil pump be able to supply oil through all of that plumbing?

I was told that I should use -10 gauge hose for this project and the pressures I should register on an oil pressure gauge should vary between 15 - 100 psi. That seems like a huge range!

What pressures should I expect? At what corresponding pressure does the stock oil light come on, on the gauge cluster?

Lastly, where would the best place be to place an oil temp sensor? In line somewhere or in the pan itself?

Thank you very much in advance!!

I doubt anyone can tell you with certainty whether the stock pump will work with that setup, unless they've tried it themselves. My guess is it will work, but you have to do it to know. The 15-100psi range sounds fine to me. I would guess your start-up pressure when cold is probably around 75 psi, so a little pad to keep from breaking the gauge is a good thing. Stock oil light comes on around 3psi I think, but pressure when fully warmed up should be around 12-15psi. Put the temp sensor on what you want to measure...i.e., do you want to measure the oil being drawn in or the temp of the oil as it leaves the block? I think I would want to know what it is exiting the engine, since that is ultimately more critical from a failure aspect.

Boom!

Thank you very much for your input. I did't get an e-mail saying that you responded though......... :(

I was just about to "bump" this post until I saw that I got a response! Anyway, I think that you're right about the temp. Exiting the block is more critical.........Do you know what the average temp is, stock? I would really like to know because what's the point of getting a reading without having a baseline to compare it to?

I understand that it varys with driving conditions and location, but lets just say average high way, cruising speed and its 80 out?

Thanks again!

Should be around 220*F. A little higher maybe, not a big deal. The coolant temp is important too...the ECU uses coolant temp to retard spark timing if it gets too hot. I think this is true for your '91, but not certain.Don't forget you will either need more oil during oil changes, or if the new system retains oil when drained, consider changing your oil more often.
