I,m new to this site and new to my nissan, so I havnt figured out just everything about proper maintainance. In fact, This is the first car I have really owned. Its got a high milage and I want to keep it going untill I have enough money to get a newer engine in it. Ine persistant problem I have is that The oil Pressure gauge seems dangerously low. It starts at 60 psi when cold but moves down to 30 psi on the highway once it warms up. But now I noticed that the pressure goes down under 15 when idling while warm and sometimes even approaches 0. I checked the dip-stick and it seemed a bit low so I put 2 quarts 10w30 in it. When I saw no change in the oil level on the stick, i put 2 more quarts in.
Unfortunately I was acually looking at the brake fluid and not the oil (which was already full) so now I had put 8 quarts into my engine, and naturally its leaking like a sponge, and im driving my mothers car again.
Someone please help me. Do i need a new oil pump, or is it just the gauge? or have I blown a head gasket? The water looked a little low, but I wasnt losing any oil prior to this dumb accident, and I havnt seen the car at any temperature above normal. And can I just do an oil change to get all this extra oil out? Any help you can give me is greatly appreciated because I simply do0nt trust mechanics.
