Have a pan that is tapped for oil return and i was wondering if it is hard to switch oil pans or if i need to pull the motor. Could i just take off motor mounts and lift motor. It is a ka24de. Any input would be appreciated thanks.

You can lift the motor by the a/c compressor with a block of wood on top of the jack. Make sure you loosen the motor nuts also.

or you could do it the not completely rediculous way and jack it up by the transmission after undoing the mounts....

I can see that it may sound stupid, but it works. That is what I did numerous times and didn't have any problems with the motor coming down.

I removed my oil pan a couple of weeks ago and all I did was take off the nut that is holding the motor mount from the bottom on both sides and placed the jack under the transmission. You don`t have to jack it up much just remove the oil pickup 3 bolts and the front sway bar. After taking off all the bolts holding the pan use a screw driver to pry the pan from the block. Oh don`t forget to remove the dip stick and oil!!

Once the pan is broken loose and kind of hanging there, you will want to unbolt the pickup tube to make the pan easier to come out also.

Yes, the pickup inside the pan. Taking out the two (or three) bolts that hold this in will make getting the pan off easier. Be carefull, I have seen two different oil pickup tubes. One just bolts to the pump with two bolts (has no gasket or oring) and the other has two bolts that hold it to the oil pump and one that goes thru a brace that bolts on the side of the main girdle. The second one has an oring seal on the top. Dont lose the oring.

For reinstallation, make sure your oil pan flange is straight (beat it back into shape) and nice and clean. Use only silicone (no gasket) for a leak free seal. Be extra carefull that you dont rub any of the silicone off when your trying to snake the pan back into place or bolting the pickup tube back into its spot.

Good luck. Hope this helps.

Not to hijack the post but if I wanted to tap my oil pan and but the bung in, how can i seal it up until im ready to turbo, i only have a couple more parts to get but i was thinking if i got that out of the way i would have a big portion of labor already out of the way. thanks, sean

I'd put a bit of thread sealant on that, just to make sure too. But yeah, little brass plug.

I'm going to enjoy dropping the pan on my KA this Spring. It seems like it'll be a good time to change the lower timing bits and put in some Nismo motor mounts.

I'm curious to hear more about the differences in the oil pickup design. I always thought they all were the kind that had two bolts and the brace. Have you seen the different designs on two DOHC engines?

The two motors I have apart right now are a 91 and a 98. The 91 has the brace and a large diameter (2.5" aprox) pickup with full diameter pickup screen. The oil enterance into the pickup is still fairly small at aprox 3/4" by 1.25". The 98 has an egg shaped pickup with no brace. The oil enterance hole appears to be the same size as the 91. The big difference besides the shape of the pickup is the screen on the 98 is formed to the inside of the egg (pushed against the top) which would limit the actual filtering surface to the diameter of the oil inlet tube to the oil pump (aprox 3/4 - 5/8"). I would think the 98 style would more easily get clogged but if its getting clogged, you have big problems anyway. I will try to get some pix of the two tomorrow.

Maybe it's an S13/S14 thing. When I look at the pickup in my FSM and in FAST, it's the one with the brace. I have a '93. I'll be curious to see what mine looks like when I drop the pan after The Thaw.

thanks, thats what I was looking for. Also, If I don't have access to a welder to weld a bung on, I was reading on ka-t.org that you can get a "bulkhead fitting" and use that instead. Is that correct?

yes but everyone that I know who uses a bulkhead fitting seems to leak, if only a little. I'd try and drill the exact size hole you needed and use a lot of sealant when you put it in.
