Yes I did search on the topic and saw discussion of 2 ways to do it: lift the motor or drop the front suspension.

I will be removing the oil pan next month to be swapped with a spare oil pan which will have the return bung welded onto it. I have seen arguments for and against both methods, but the only arguments against lifting the engine seem to come from daveee who's installer (apparently a moron) screwed up the engine mounts.

Now, I like the lifting of the motor idea. I have already swapped a KA (with transmission attached) from one 240 to another without any problems at all. What I am looking for is details on how the removal of the oil pan can be accomplished this way.

Here are my questions:

1) Is it necesary to remove the radiator to get the amount of clearance necesary to do this.

2) Is it necesary to loosen the transmission mount bolts in order to get the motor high enough to allow for the removal of the oil pan.

3) If one is planning on replacing the clutch at the before or after the installation of the new oil pan. What would be the best sequence to do this in.

Thanks,jeff

I usually use the lift engine method with the transmission installed but I don't see why you can't do it with the transmission removed also so it's your call. Are you using a hoist or jacking up from underneath to lift the motor?

1. I didn't have to remove the radiator but when you lift it the engine fan will hit the radiator shroud so it 's prolly easier to remove the shroud but i didn't have to.

2. It's not necessary to loosen the transmission mounts.

3. refer to first paragraph

I couldn't get the oil pan out on my '91 my lifting the engine. I had to lift the engine upa bit AND drop the front crossmember. What a PITA, because I didn't seal the lower front cover properly and had to do it a second time. That sucked.

so pulling the motor may be the best solution hmm? I am really leaning towards this.. I have done it with this car before.

I forgot to add that the only way to remove the pan with this method is also includes removing the oil pickup once the pan is dropped. With the pickup removed, then you can pull the pan out but this was on S14's and not sure if same for s13.

Bro, Heres the best advice..Just get it done by your local general mechanic, They dont say no and aint gonna charge u an arm and a leg to do it, The mechanics near my house are doing mine, Small shop but they do good work, They quoted me 70 bucks, Id rather pay 70 bucks then have to go thru all that trouble, Just have the other oilpan welded and ready to go

when you jack up the engine from the bottom (if you're raising the engine with transmission attached, and you are not a moron), where do you place the jack under? what part of engine/transmission?I am in the same boat, soon I'll need to swap oil pans on my s13.

I second that..I'll be doing this to my S14 in about a week...where is the best point to put the jack? So you only want to loosen the motor mounts, not the transmission mount, correct? Thanks..

Did this on my SOHC S13.

1. Drain your oil on flat. Jack stand your car.2. Remove ratiator shroud. Losen 2 bolts on end of front sway bar. Lose 2 motor mount bolts ( from bottom, not near engine ). 3. Lose all bolts on oil pan. You have to remove few metal pieces in order to get all bolts remove. Bolts size 8mm. You will require 6" thin 1/4 extender on your wrench.4. Lift your motor. You will find there is no place for you to jack. You can get a lifter. I use a piece of wood (to even the force and not braking anything), put it on the jack stand, and jack the lowest point of motor/transmission section. Lift it up 4 inches or so.5. Tap your oil pan lose. Becareful.. some motor oil will still be inside. Prepare some towels.6. At this point, I still can't get the oil pan out because the oil squiters or oil extender.. blah blah ( the one that suck the oil from oil pan ) is blocking the oild pan. I losen it. There is 3 10mm bolts.7. Oil squiter came off. Oil pan will also come off easily by pushing forward.8. I will lower the jack ( on the transmission ) at this time, and jack it up again when I want to put my oil pan back. This is a good idea because you don't want your motor and transmission to put all weight on a jack stand.

Good luck.

No transmission mount - No Radiator remover.

You also want to check your vacuum line/hose when everything is done. Some line will came off when lift your engine up 4 inches.

Thanks.
