The person I had working on my car screwed me over and now I'm refusing to let him touch it anymore and I had a question about a job he left unfinished. I finally found an oil pump and im putting it on. The question is, according to him the oil pan can't be removed without unbolting and lifting the engine so that it can be cleaned and a new gasket can be put on...is that true or was he just b/sing me? I really need to know because I'm tearing into it once I get back from vacation and need to know what I'm getting myself into. Thanks.

What year 240sx? Either way, you will need to remove the crank pulley and lower front cover to get the pump off. The pump is attached to the front lower cover. I am 95% sure you can not remove the front cover without removing the pump pickup tube: you have to slide the cover forward off the crank and the pickup will certainly hit inside the pan.

Put the car on 4 jackstands. Loosen the middle two front swap bar supports, and swing it down and out of the way. Use a floor jack under the transmission bellhousing to lift the engine. Loosen the pan and reach in the front to loosen the two pickup tube bolts. I did not need to loosen my motor mounts to gain enough clearance(probably raised the engine a good 1.5-2"), but your mileage may vary. Once the tube is lose, pull the pan, then pull the front cover/pump.

Be very carefull tightening the two front oil pan bolts that attach it to the front cover: they strip very easily.

PS - you will need to remove the engine/transmission gussets(braces that connect the block to the bellhousing) to gain access to the rear few oil pan bolts.

I'm going to have to disagree with you on this. Nissan uses liquid gasket for their oil pan and definetly needs replaced if removed.

Yes the motor needs lifted to clear the engine cradle. Good luck bro, keep us updated.

Cool. I want to get it done as soon as possible which is why I'm getting all the info now so I'll have it all when I get home. Does anyone have a picture of the middle two front swap bar supports that slipnfall was talking about so I'll know what needs unbolting? It would help alot because the auto stores around me can't get any manuals for 240's.

...and are there any torque specs I should know or will it be one of those jobs that you just tighten the bolts till it feels right?

I've been holding off on saying it, but search: there are links to a free factory service manual online. Just search for 'FSM download'. It will have all the pictures you need along with torque spec's.
