ok stupid question time.

the oil pan had a broken tensioner floating around in it so the paint is scratched off in places. i know its gonna get sucked into the filter as it flakes, but is there anything i can do with it off short of repainting the whole thing?

p.s.

very happy i decided to redo the gasket cause the other one didnt seal due to a bent up flange.

Too bad the random shrapnel in the pan will most likely clog up the oil pickup and starve the motor of oil before the filter can do anything about it.

I'd suggest getting a can of aircraft paint stripper (meant for stripping aluminum) and spray down the pan. After you spray it on it'll foam up and then you can just spray w/ water and the paint will literally melt off.

i thought about that but what do i do afterwards? leave it bare? theres really no way to paint it as far as i can tell.

the paint would only flake off in tiny bits so its not like itll clog it all at once. the shrapnel is all gone. but id rather not have anything floating around in there if i can help it.

Leave it bare. The pan is aluminum (or steel?). It's not like the oil is going to corrode it or anything.

do you really think the tensioner is gona scrape that much paint off, and even if it did, it would come off in small flakes, not like big pieces

id have to guess its some sort of alloy since it rusts on the outside. same with the water neck cast into the aluminum intake manifold, yet it rusts. go figure.

well, you definatly need to get that tensioner out, but as for paint, i dont see the inside of the oil pan which is always covered in oil rusting, same reason why internal engine parts dont rust
