That's what Nissan quoted me. I know that you have to lift the engine, etc.., but damn that is alot. Has anyone had it changed a national chain place like Badyear, Midas, Sears or someplace like that? If so, how much? I live in SC.

Thanks.

Good lord.......

I think he meant to have it done; not the cost of the liquid gasket. Sorry but I've never paid a place to do work on my car. Just bust out the FSM and some tools and call a friend!!

However, $300 is quite a bit of money so maybe you're better off learning how to do it anyway. The cost of an FSM, a nice set of tools and drinks for your friends will cost less than that!

I need to do this to my car. You really have to lift the engine? Meh, looks like I should get some engine mounts while I'm at it.

umm... lift the engine?

you jack up the car, drain your oil, take off the 10mm bolts, get a chisel or screwdriver and pop that chit off, then scrape all the old liquid gasket off, then apply new gasket (i like toyota gasket) and then pop it back on, torque the 10mm bolts again, all oil, and unjack your car.

a 30 minute job.

Techs like to milk jobs. They have a book that lists how long these jobs are supposed to take. According to the book that is very time consuming. I would rather spend $300 on tools and stuff and do it myself.

Sorry boss but you're high as a kite. As "red coupe" said, pan won't clear the front cross member. You're options are either jack up the motor (using a piece of wood so as not to dent anything) or drop the cross member. I chose the latter because it was easier and I had an extra set of hands to help me relocate the member once I was done.

I don't want to say you're a liar, but I'd pay $300 to see you do it in 30 minutes!

maybe your first mistake was going to nissan to get it done. just take to any reputable good shop and have them do it half that price if not less. all there charging you is labor. since liquid gasdket cost no more than 5 bucks at autozone.

Engine has to be lifted. I have a cherrypicker so it is easier for me. It isn't as difficult as people make it sound. Just be patient and don't think you are getting done in an hour. I would guess a novice with most of the right tools could do this in 4 hours. You learn through experience.

I think he's assuming that you can do it without actually removing the oil pan, just by loosening it... Even then, I don't see how you'd be able to chisel out the old gasket near at the back of the pan near the transmission. You can barely get the bolts out with a ratchet! There's no way in hell you can do it in 30 minutes though.

i just dropped my oil pan w/ out dropping the crossmember.... what u gotta do is put the car on jack stands then put a floor jack at the very front of the transmission (where it bolts to the engine) unbolt the motor mounts and just lift it up till it wont go any higher.... after the pan comes off u still cant get it out cause the oil pickup from the front cover goes down to far and the pan wont clear it.... so what uve gotta do is unbolt the pan and front cover and remove the front cover while the pan is resting on the crossmember (the main bearing cap for the whole crankshaft has a lil 10 mm bolt that keeps the oil pickup from movin around so u have to remove that bolt too it should be on the driver side) then after the front covers out go ahead and slide the pan forward then twist it around to get it past the sway bar.... this took a lil while to get it right and i bet installation will be even worse!

Is a cumbersome process, I did mine and still leaking.....makes me wish I paid somebody to do it.....now I gotta redo it...Im fairly new at messing with gaskets and sealing....you only get some time after laying the sealant to get the parts back on and there is hardly any room if you dont have the crossmember off..
