Now I'm no idiot, but I swear I am having the most difficult time getting the oil pan gasket to install with no leaks...

I've probably replaced the gasket at least 4 times since I've owned this car. I always use one of the felpro gaskets with a whole bunch of the high temp red sealant. I always make sure to return the bolts in the correct order, and I let it sit for a long while before adding oil. And every freakin time it leaks.

In the whole realm of things this isn;t even that difficult of a job (besides the part where you ahve to slide the pan out from under the lifted engine, that kinda sucks) and it just seems to be evading me somehow.

Any tips? Maybe not use the gasket and jsut use a lot of the sealant?

Thanks

RTV only. Aim for a good bead pattern and tighten it down in the proper order and you shouldn't have any problems. Did you check the oil pan or the block for any knicks that could be causing a leak?

Did you throughly clean each contact surface? What made you replace the gasket in the first place? Maybe the oil pan is warped?

make certain the mating surface of the pan isnt deformed around the bolt holes or otherwise warped. i had one that was and it ripped the gasket. fortunately i had a spare pan that wasnt damaged. otherwise i would have had to use rtv. if you use the gasket hand tighten snugly so it compresses ever so slightly. i got it on the secong try and no leaks so far.

the only pans i have ever seen a gasket on for nissan cars is the trans pan. DO NOT use gaskets on these cars thay are not designed with or for them. the pan has dimples in it for you to fill with sealer [RTV].

Besides IMO felpro gaskets suck.

why do they make a gasket if it isnt supposed to have one?

i just laid a bead in the indentations and skinned the gasket of both sides.

i dont think that nissan sells one, not sure though. i assume they just sell a gasket to make it easier on some people, but the FSM says to use liquid gasket so thats what i would use...
