has anyone noticed oil loss in their rogue...i have a 2009 sl awd and have had to add a half quart of oil every 1,000 miles (currently have 4500 miles; 1st oil change was done at 3,000 miles)...does this seem normal...have had v6 nissan products and never experienced any oil loss between oil changes (every 3,000 miles)...

Half a quart every 1000 miles is excessive... even during the break-in period. Bring it to the dealer ASAP so they can perform an oil consumption test and compression test to determine what is wrong.

BTW, you have to wait 10 minutes after the engine is turned off to check the oil. This is necessary to allow the oil to drain back into the pan. If you check immediately after the engine is turned off, it will always be reading low.

With more than 18.000 miles on my car, the engine never dropped one ounce of oil.

Unfortunately with only half a quart every 1000 miles, every dealer will tell you that is within acceptable range (The manufacturer acceptable limit is one quart every 1000 miles from what I read in forums).

But it is still good to let them know that you are not happy with the car and logged the problem. You may find a nice dealer trying to solve your problem, you never know.

How did you do your break-in drive? Easy on the throttle, hard on it? Did you wait for the engine to be warm (about 15 -20 minutes) before pushing it? What rpms did you read usually when accelerating?

I am easy on my car (maybe too easy)... but I have an awesome fuel economy in return.

Yeah, I think everyone will agree that this is not normal at all, my Rogue doesn't use any oil whatsoever. But don't worry, the dealer will take care of it for you free of charge, just get it in there as soon as you can.

"Some" oil consumption is normal... in fact many mechanics considered it to be a good thing. It indicates the oil is circulating and being consumed in minor amounts due to friction and the "miniscule" amounts that get past the rings and valves thus indicating total lubrication of "all" moving surface areas in both the upper and lower engine.

1 quart of oil every 3000 can be considered normal... however... I'd feel more comfortable if your vehicle had 100,000 miles on it. Unfortunately... after 4500 miles... 1/2 quart every 1000 miles is excessive.

If oil is not leaking onto your driveway... then I'm assuming the valve cover gaskets and engine seals are all tight. Oil can also leak into the cooling system if the head gasket is bad. When this occurs you'll find an oil on the water in your radiator. TO TEST: With the engine COLD... remove the radiator cap and insert you finder below the water level. On removing you finder if you see a ring of oil you're in trouble. Or if you don't want to use your finger... you can also shine a flashlight into the radiator and look for an oil slick on the surface of the water. However I doubt that's your problem due to the volume of oil were discussing. This only leaves the valves and rings If its valves or rings I have to believe you'd see "some" smoke.

TO TEST: (2 ways) - 1) After leaving your Rogue sit all night... in the morning stand behind the vehicle and watch the exhaust as someone else starts the car. If any oil is leaking past the rings you'll see a initial cloud of blue smoke (heavy dense smoke) on initial startup. The heavier smoke is not to be confused with the white transparent smoke you usually see when starting up on a cool day when the engine is warming up. 2) With your Rogue warmed up... follow it in another vehicle as it drives around town. As your Rough pulls away from a traffic light after sitting for a couple minutes... if you see any smoke that lingers in the air behind the car... you have a problem and should let the dealer know.

The last QR25DE to experience an oil consumption issue was the late model year '06 Altima and Sentra SE-R. The Rogue uses a newer, 2nd generation of this motor.

A Technical Service Bulletin was released for the Sentra/Altima oil consumption issue. Here is part of the bulletin that describes how an oil consumption test is performed:

1 - Perform an oil change.2 - Wait 10 minutes after adding oil to ensure all oil has drained into the oil pan. Check to ensure the oil level is exactly at the H mark. Add oil if necessary.3 - Record the vehicle mileage.4 - Instruct the customer to drive the vehicle for 700mi (1100km) then return to the dealer to have the oil level checked.5 - If the oil level drops to a point less than halfway between the H and L marks, there is an oil consumption issue.

If the dealer finds your Rogue to consume excessive amounts of oil, Nissan may authorize an engine replacement under warranty.

Bring it to the dealer so they can perform the test!

Free engines? Heck, might want to quaff a bit off before you bring it in.
