While driving the Q to work the other ay my oil light came wich i thought was odd being i dont have any large oil spots where i park..... Not to bothered by it i grabed some oil and topped it off ( it wasnt that low ) but after filling it the light is still on and there is a slight tapping on the driver side lifters. Needless to say the Q has been Quarrintined to the garage till this is fixed. So im looking for any diagnosis and where to start. not that it matters ( but i do find it odd) the day before this happened i had the passenger side on jackstands all day. you always say tell you everything thanx

Tapping or rod bearing knock? How many quarts low was the oil? Start by checking oil pressure sender.

Chain guides done? Maybe oil pump? Maybe oil pump clogged?Need more service history to make diagnosis. Noise is BAD!

The way the oil pump is driven, I'd make sure the crank pulley bolt is torqued to its proper specs.

Isn't that light more about low oil pressure than fluid level. I know that the two can go together, but it could be something else causing the low pressure.

(I'm stating what may be obvoius to some, for the others like me.)

The light is like an on/off switch. Its triggered when pressure gets below 3 psi, I think (someone please correct me). Its basically pretty god damn dangerous when the light is on.

In most vehicles, that light indicates your engine needs rebuilt (i.e. its too late).

yes chain guides were done oil pumed clogged is what i thought to i figure on droping the pan to see if there is any cluse there? but before i do here is a odd finding i had (HAD) to move the Q due to the weather and when i started it the tapping was only there for 2 seconds (like a dry start then gone running like it did before this whole escapade. i didnt drive it but 50 feet out into the drieway but found it odd that the tapping was gone i would think 5 days of sitting the tapping would be worse i will be droping the pan after the holidays ( this is my busy time of year ) willl let you know what i find thanks all

You should be able to install an actual oil pressure gauge at the point where the oil pressure sending unit is located. A little simple plumbing using a couple of fittings will work. A tee and a nipple should be all you need. I can't tell you the size, unfortunately, since I haven't done this on your type engine but it should be something around 1/4 inch sized fittings I'm thinking. Metric fitting of the correct size are available at NAPA.

An actual reading of the oil pressure number will tell you the crank bearings condition. High number, good- low number, bad.

I had a vw gti with the same issue. I added about a pint of straight kerosene to the crankcase and fired it up. Let it idle for abouit 10 mins to get nice and warm. Drain oil for at least 30 mins and replace with new and filter.

Problem solved.

You could also pull the sending unit and test it. Installing a good psi gauge at the engine is the first thing I'd do.

Good luck.

CAUTION: this is a nissan, it is NOT 1/4 NPT.check the old posts, look for BSPT.
