Before winter came, I would be able to start the motor fine with no oil light going on. The first cold day and I start the car and its fine. I let it run for a few minutes to warm up and still good. Then I drive about 3 blocks and the oil light goes on. I pull over and check the oil and its in between L and H. Get back in the car and start it, the light is on for a few seconds and turns off. The weather gets warmer and the light stays off. Then it gets cold again and now the light is on for about 5-15 seconds then turns off. The other day it would go on and off for about 5 minutes with varying lengths of being on(this is from a cold start). I revved it to about 4000 and it stays off. Anyone experience this? Is the oil pump going bad? Theres no problem when its warm and I'm using 10w30. The temps have been 20-35 in chicago.

its probably due to the fact that it is wicked cold out and your oil is fairly thick at those temps, so it takes a while to move the oil to where it needs to be (like the top end or turbo) so maybe invest in a block heater or thinner oil...

10w30 should be find for chicago.

i would try replacing the oil pressure switch on the side of the block first. It's what turns the light on. the unit for a KA will work just fine. It's located under the intake manifold behind the support bracket. Best method i've had on getting that guy out without breaking your wrist in 5 spots is to remove that bracket.

The oil pressure light turning on is inidicative of low oil pressure. Best thing to do is to get a mechanical oil pressure gauge and check the pressure.

Personally I would not drive it until you know if this is an electrical problem or a mechanical problem. As of right now, if it is a mechanical problem the motor can easily be rebuilt. If you continue to drive it and it has low oil pressure, you will completely destroy it and be forced to buy another engine.

Just to give you a heads up, low oil pressure can be caused by several things. The type you are describing is usually indicative of worn out mains bearings in the bottom end. A bad oil pressure switch will not cause low oil pressure, it will only turn the light on(or not turn it on).

Oil light + knocking later = BAD BAD news...

Same thing happend to mine.. I had oil light flicker at me due to a bad oil pump (possible for your case) and soon followed by knocking from the valve cover... Result is... Spun main and rod bearings and scorched cams and rocker arms.

Stop driving it and welcome to the world of rebuild!
