Oil leak on cold weather

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Hi,

Recently we got some cold nights here, around -30C (approx. -20F).When I first started my EX at the morning, I found some motor oil spots on the snow after few minutes warm-up. I experienced this problem twice.

I think it could be a gasket/metal problem amplified when temperature is very low.

I know someone who had that problem with a Subaru.

Did anybody experiment the same ?

Anyway I'm going to report the problem to my car dealer.

Regards

That happens alot on the gaskets. Another reason the car life in the cold weather region is shorter than warm areas. The dealers does not have cure but giving you new gaskets or a new engine in some cases, eventhough they install a new engine the problem will happen again, actually it happens easier since new car is assembled stronger than a technician doing the work. Hopefully it is just not that common problems with cold weather, maybe Infiniti has a good cure which will make the leak go away.

Good Luck and nice ride~

I live in a more temperate climate so I have very little experiences with such extreme temperatures. Growing up I lived and worked in Southern Massachusetts and had some experience with pretty cold weather but nothing like that.

Being in production for as long as it has the VG engine does not leak when it's new, or old for that matter. With the right maintenance they can last for a while, so when an 08+ exhibits leaks this early on should not be ignored, keep in mind that oil is the life blood of your car and even in extreme cold it should become thicker and not flow as easily even with seals at their maximum contraction.

It is almost understandable that given such extreme temperature swings going from a sustained sub zero climate will accelerate wear, but it should not cause leaks. I am very curious what the source of your leak is, please keep us posted when you get it looked at.

Good Luck

I finally found the source of the leak.

The oil filter O-ring was damaged and worstened with cold weather.

Happy it was only this.
