My engine is leaking oil. It has about 300 miles on a rebuild. It's leaking from in between the engine and transmission. I took a light and looked everywhere I could and wiped it up and saw where it was leaking from as best I could. I took the transmission/flywheel off and now I can't really see where it's leaking from. It only leak when The car is warmed up and running. Then it will drip like once a minute. With the car off it might leak like 1 drip per week/2weeks.

The rear engine seal was put on my the engine re-builder (not me). The oil pan gasket was put on by me. I had the engine out of the car when I put it and and I took my time when I did it. I bought the kit with the two gaskets and used the oem rtv orange stuff.

Where do you think it's leaking from? or should I just replace both seals and call it a day. I also checked the head and other places it could be leaking down from but it's all clean.

It looks like the rear main seal is leaking....

I would start by changing that seal since you'll have to re-seal the pan after as well. Kinda killing 2 birds with one stone.

I might be wrong but the FSM seems to say to just pop the seal out and put the new one in.

Are you saying I should like unscrew that thing, install the new seal and then put a new seal and rtv for just the rear of the oil pan. or reseal the entire oil pan?

Could you please explain how you would do this?

My bad, I have always had the pan off when doing anything crank related. So I always clean the pan out, reseal it etc as a last step. You should be able to pull the seal out and the just install a new one. Apply motor oil to the new seal before you install it.

Check for loose hardware for sure.

Yeah, just replace the rear main. I happen to know its only $6 at Auto Zone, and you are already in there.

yeah, rear main seal is PITA.

try not to push the new seal where old seal was, because of scrapes on the crank. putting new seal where old one was is the main reason why new seal leaks - scratches on crank makes new seal leak.

I'm not sure I understand. how am I going to put the new seal anywhere but where the old one is?

Are you saying to try to put it slightly more forward or back in case the crank is scratched?

i was completely wasted when i wrote that... what i meant: do not put new seal exactly into the same place where the old (leaking) was. there are scratches on crank (my blind guess), so they make new seal to leak oil.

I think you and I need to get together and, well, drink. I am a big fan of drinking and posting on the internet.

in other words:

yes. placing it 0.5mm away from the original location should solve your constant leakage problem.
