Ok, I admit I am an idiot on this one. Being in a rush can be a bad thing. I was recently about to go on a road trip. I backed out of the garage and shut off the engine. Decided I should check the oil. It is impossible to check the oil after the engine has been started due to the lousy dip stick set up/location. It looked low as best I could tell. I put in about a half quart. Still it is impossible to tell since any new oil runs down the dipstick. Anyway I hit the road. A few days later I notice an oil leak. I check the oil with a cold engine to see it is way over filled. I drained the oil and filled to the correct level. I still have a leak. It appears to be coming from the area where the filter screws in. There is a canister type fixture with a metal tube coming out of it which attaches to a rubber hose. Could the excess oil/pressure have caused some type leak there? Any help is appreciated.

I'm not sure, but it is still on warranty I would take it to the dealer and have them deal with it and just keep the details about overfilling to yourself.

I would have to agree with Kerrton,

Normally I take responsibility for all of my actions, but I find it hard to believe that 1/2 qt over would cause any issues. Way back in the day I actually put 8qts of oil in a nice old lady's 4 cylinder Nissan Sentra. Besides running rough and smoking it caused no lasting issues.

1/2 qt would not increase oil pressure nor should it increase internal crankcase pressure enough to cause an issue. The main worry is aerating the oil or over oiling the pistons/rings. Given typical safety margins this would normally take more than an extra 1/2 qt etc.. But I'm no expert on the current Nissan V6 and crankcase either...

I wouldn't doubt if the leak is coming from elsewhere or completely unrelated. That's why I agree with just taking it to your dealership and telling them nothing other than you returned from a trip and now have an oil leak. Now, if they check it out and call you and ask if you ever overfilled the crankcase - because your leak is typically caused by that mistake,,, then it's up to you to come clean...

Best of luck - let us know what they find.

I took the Murano in last Friday. It was a seal that was leaking in the area under the oil filter. The most amazing thing, $50 to repair ( I didn't go to the dealer due to not under warranty).

Thanks for all the responses.
