usually you'll hear the rattling sounds to tip you off. Ball park 100-120k you'll hear the rattling of the guides.

If it's behind the cover...is this a ka24e, ka24de? If it's a sohc, the chain job goes fairly quickly and is very straight forward. If you've a dohc...it takes some time and a bit of patience especially with the oil pan.

i have the dohc ! i already did the oil pan last year thinkin thats were the oil was coming from !! i do hear a guide noise on top in the valve cover area !! i have 120,000 or so on it its a 91 . worn timing chain at 120,000 that seems early to me , and were is the oil leakin from in the area?? oil pump or maybee the oil tube gasget ?? should i get one of those timing chain kits ?? i also had a huge oil leak from the front crank seal , fixed that !! the oil leak is the only problem she really drives and runs well ,i think i am like the second owner as well . she even shines nice with some wax !! dont want to blow her motor !! is it possible someone put mobil 1 in it and now all the gasgets are sho t , i heard of that happening to older cars !! if this was your 240 what would u do ?? thanks for the help so far !! new to these cars worked on fords chevys and subaru's . ne=ver nissan

i think he was referring to the fact you need to remove the oil pan to gain access to a couple bolts that hold the lower timing cover on, this part tends to be a PITA for a driveway job.
