i opened up the hood to my '95 240 and i toticed what looked like oil staining around my spark plugs. i guess i went a while without looking under the hood but it looks like it leaked out a good 3 inches. does anyone know what that means and what i can do to fix it?

Are you seeing oil around your plugs while they are installed? Like in the hole for the spark plug? Or is the business end of it covered with oil?

And where are you measuing 3 inches of oil? Are you talking about what you see in the spark plug hole? Or are you referring to the oil level being 3 inches too low?

I think we need a little more clarification to help ya.

Are you sure you didnt accidently pour oil on the head when you last filled it up? I could have just leaked in that way. If the plug wires were off.

Replacing just your valve cover gasket won't help. There are gaskets that go around the spark plug. You can pick these gaskets at Nissan. Just take off your valve cover gasket and take them off and put the new ones on.

if you take your valve cover off it is a really good idea to replace all the gaskets. also is the oil on tthe sparking end of the plug if so this could mean you need new rings....

Or you can pick these gaskets up at Autozone. Probably cheaper than Nissan. Or you could just use some liquid gasket. Even cheaper than Autozone.

thanks for your input guys. i may have been exagerrating on the 3 inches of oil thing. it too me a while but here's a pic of my engine. it looks like there's a circular ring around the second cylinder but its not consistent with the other three. i may have spilled some oil when i did a change a month back.

what do you think?

Even though I dont see the big deal in that image, pete thats not a good idea to do. Just rtv'n over the old now plastic gasket really isnt wise. The gaskets get plasticised (as I like to call it) gasket the get very brittle and crack easy, possbly upon reinstalling after rtv'ing it :)

Going to BCC sunday hehe.

I would have to agree with 96s14se. You dont even need rtv at all. and from nissan those gaskets are not so expensive that even a homeless person couldnt afford. Do it right and get the o-rings from nissan.

i bought the car about a month ago with 77k miles on it and the engine sounded strong. but a few weeks ago it seems like i'll hear this sound from the engine when its idling, almost a really slight constant knocking sound. its unnoticable to my friends but something bugs me.also, when i upshift, it feels like the car is having problems speeding up at 2500rpm. i used to be able to shift into 2000k okay. it stutters and vibrates like i'm not giving it enough gas. . .

any ideas or am i overreacting?

But you do need rtv..... for the half circle lobes on the gasket :)

As far as that noise go you may have some increased wear in the lifters. Not a potentially big problem but they will get noisey as they wear over time. You could always yank the cover off and break out the feeler gauge to make sure. Could also be just varnish build-up and not allowing the cam lobes and or lifters to slide as freely. I have the same noise and it recently has gotten louder. My clearance is good as I just checked it a cpl months ago, so Im going to try this flush (sorta like industrial sea foam, but when you dump it into the engine it states not to drive it, just let it rev at 2k or so for so long, and drain the oil after) my friend uses at the local nissan dealership. Im not too concerned with it and think this will solve it.

Take a LONG screw driver and place the handle to your ear and the tip to various parts of the engine to determine exactly where the noise is comming from.

Sounds alot like some of the problems im going through. My car is still throwing an ecu code 13, and sometimes 34. I think i need to change the oxygen sensor, and find out what is causing some kind of failure in the temp. control circuit. (I already changed the temp control sensor.) Thirty four is the knock sensor. See iff theres any stored codes in the ecu.:(

so...did anybody determine what's leaking out around where the plug wires go? My car does the same thing...don't notice any detriment to performance, just a dirty engine. The sparkplugs themselves aren't oil fouled
