I have a 01 pathfinder w a VQ35DE engine. I have an oil leak which appears to be coming out of a metal object that is made up of rings. It is directly under the alternator and next to the oil filter. What is this item and what does it do? Also would it be worth it for me to try and repair it or should i just take it in??

Thank you for your help

hey.. I searched and found an OLDIE!

I know that this is the oil cooler, but I haven't looked into fixing the oil leak. Can someone shed some light on whether there is just an O-ring to replace or do we buy the whole deal and replace the sucker?

Thankspete

My '01 has a slow oil leak in the very front passenger side. I poked my head up in there but I couldn't really tell where since the oil was spread out, but it did appear the oil cooler, thing with the fins, could be the culprit.

I haven't seen any updates to this one, what is the prognosis ?New cooler ? or just an O-ring ?How much work is it ?

My leak was coming from that oil cooler. It turns out that the sealing surfaces were coated in oil residue. I cleaned the surfaces, and applied some Hylomar to thr o-rings, and the leak is gone.

The cooler is held on by a single 17mm bolt/feed tube. In order to get a wrench on the bolt, I removed the front sway bar mounts (let the bar dangle from the end links). I didn't remove the hoses clamped to the cooler, but still had enough room to get in there with some cleaner and a brass wire brush. Be sure to clean all 4 o-ring surfaces: 1 on the bolt thing, 2 on the cooler, and 1 where the cooler mounts to the engine. Once it was all cleaned up, installation is the reverse of removal . Remember that the bigger o-ring has some geometry for lining it up, and there is a tab that locates the cooler.

Good luck!Pete

So you just have to remove the one bolt on the top of the cylinder ?

Do you have to drain the engine oil first ?

Are the hoses really long enough to get the thing down for inspection and cleaning ?
