When I removed the TB today when taking the plenum off to do the knock sensors there was oil on the bottom of the plenum just inside the TB, the plenum gaskets also had oil on them, could this be from a clogged PCV valve?

normally there will be a thin layer of varnish on the plenum... It wont be dry/sparkling... If it was thick, then it could be due to a bad PCV valve.

this wasn't a dried substance it was like a little pool of fluid, I assume it was oil, it felt like oil

Oil vapor from PCV condenses inside plenum, dirt from air filter and carbon and other vapors from EGR..........combine and pool and eventually make their way down thru runners to area of fuel injection where they are washed on to valve stems and into combustion chamber.

Conventional oil evaporates roughly 2-4 times more in volume than the best synthetics..........therefore you can guess which will gunk up the plenum and throttle plate faster................per mile/hour of use!

NOACK numbers range from 4% to 15% [2006 minimum GF3] evaporation.........what is your oil test results?

Something like Mobil 1 full synthetic will cut oil in plenum in HALF!

Other than constant cold crank and very short trips highway cruising [EGR] adds the most oil.
