oil in the intkake pipe?

hey I've got an s13 and I am trying to learn about the engine so bear with me. I took apart my intake and I saw something that SEEMS strange to me. The hose that goes from the intake pipeto the valve cover has oil in it. and there is oilyresidue on the bottom of the pipe. I assume its oil looks and like it. Is this normal, if so what is the hose connections function. If not then what the h*ll is this crap and why is it oozing into my intake pipe.
