Oil in my intake and my exhaust?

Need help troubleshooting oil soot in my throttle body and oil in my exhaust. Pulled off my Injen intake and found oil soot in the intake around the hose attachment which comes from a canister between the battery and the radiator. What is this component? Sometimes the cars starts rough and smokes. Most other times it starts strong with no problem. Doesn't smoke after started and runs fine. No oil coming from valve cover, but there is a good amount around the exhaust manifold and found some on the tips of my APEXI N1 Dual exhaust. Need your help! :help

there is a valve that controls the blowby gas from the crank case/valve cover and sends a certain amount to the intake to be burned off. its called the PCV valve, it is most likely the source of your trouble. do a search for it.

the oil in your exhaust im not too sure of, if your car has alot of miles it might just be your rings wearing down (which is normal) and you just burn oil alittle faster than a lower mileage car. but if oil is dripping from the exhaust you might have a dead cylinder thats full of oil, check the plugs, the electrode on the plug should not be covered with oil. it should be lightly toasted :) (light colored haze)

If your rings or valve seals/guides are worn then you would probably see smoke on start up. But if there is oil dripping from the tail pipe of the exhaust, then you've got a bigger problem. Replace the PCV valve if you haven't already done so as it does recirculate oil vapor from the crank case back into the intake and should be changed with regular maintainance. This may solve the problem with oil in the intake. But I would also look under your car for any oil drips from the oil pan, etc.... If there is an oil leak under the car it will spray oil all over the bottom of the car well driving. Also if your PCV is clogged and is otherwise not doing it's job it could be causing an excess of pressure in the engine that is being force out other parts of the motor. And definitely check your plugs as mentioned above for any signs of oil.~Brendan

Doesn't the canister only control fuel tank vapor emissions though? Or does it work like a catchtank for lower crankcase emissions as well?

yea the canister is only used to store fuel vapors from the fuel tank and is purged into the intake when the car is at operating temp and the closed throttle switch is open.

Gentlemen, thank you for all the good info. The engine has almost 116K, so I will plan on an overhaul soon, but in the mean time I will look to change the PCV valve. Only, where is it exactly? The Chilton's manual really sucks when it comes to the location of this part.

You should find the PCV on the intake manifold. I believe it's threaded into the manifold (other cars have a press fit type sealed with a grommet). It will look sort of like a bolt with a black rubber hose attached to it. Just pull the hose off and unscrew it. Check the emissions or tune-up section of your Chiltons manifold. I would think that there would be some info on it somewhere in there. Possibly buy the part first so you can see what it looks like (only $2-5 typically).~Brendan

The PCV valve on a DE engine is actually in between the upper and lower intake manifolds and damned near impossible to get to. You can make access easier by removing the alternator I believe, and then it's a relatively simple fix. Check your plugs, that will be a GREAT indicator of where the problem lies.
