My car seems to lose oil every week after I add 3 bottles of oil. My car doesn't seem like it's leaking because I even checked under the car, and even layed carboard underneath it to check for leaks. Am I burning oil? I drive a 92 240 by the way...

If you are burning that much oil you should be able to see massive cloudes of smoke, 3 bottles. Is the front of your motor coated with oil, around the fan, and belts?

Make sure you're not checking your oil when your car is parked on an incline.

I made that mistake and I thought I was losing a shxt-ton of oil, when in reality I'm only losing a tiny bit.

It may not smoke real bad, especially if you're doing a lot of driving.

How sooty is the inside of the tailpipe?

pull ur spark plugs and take a look. If they are oily ur rings are gone, it they have large grey deposits then ur valve seals are leaking. If its not smoking badly its probably ur seals because what happens is the oil actually mix's with the fuel so ur engine is burning it instead of when ur rings are worn and it just gets pushed out the tailpipe, check that for oily residue also. Sounds like u could use a rebuild.

my car only smokes when im press on the accelerator from a stopped position. it doesn't smoke at idle. i'll have to check how sooty the tailpipe is tomorrow since it's dark out right now. i've also redone the head last month because of a blown head gasket, but im guessing it's probably the seals or rings also. i just hope my car is still under warranty for my head gasket, because i believe the mechanic is at fault here for doing a lousy job.

haha what mad tyte JDM 2 stroke weed wacker motor swap? i have the stock dohc

Did you lose this much oil before the headgasket? If not it's not likely the mechanic is at fault here... how many miles on the engine?

so u had a new hg and valve job done? If so having that work done on a high mileage engine will increase the compression which in case will degrade the next weakest link(ur piston rings). U'd probably be better off trying to find a low mileage clean ka to swap in if ur on a budget, or if u have to money have the engine rebuilt.

ya anytime you rebuild the head you have to re-ring your pistons. if it only smokes for a few seconds when you hit the gas and when you first start it, its probably just your valve seals. If it smokes all the time then your rings are shot. If you arent looking for performance.. and are mechanically inclined, go buy a Chiltons's manual and read the rebuild section. if you feel comfortable just re-ring your pistons yourself. make sure if you do you replace the rod bearings while you're at it. if you want performance.. then go all out and have a pro build it.

Does the back of your car look dirty, even when my front main crank seal was shot it was kicking oil all the way to the back and making my bumper oily and it never dripped any on the ground aswell. If thats the problem its a quick and easy change.

rear main seal is also a common parts that leaks oil.

Probably your pistons rings. You're probably burning alot of oil.

Valve guide seals are easy to diagnose. Your car will smoke in the morning when you start it but then stop - like mine.

Smoking under throttle means you have bad rings, valves or both. Get a compression check but it's probably time for you to re-build.

Ask the mechanic...

I was losing oil fast in my '95 and found out it was the oil pressure sensor. Right by the oil filter, so I never noticed it was leaking cause the oil from changing it always ran down next to it. I was losing almost 1 quart a week.

What did you do to fix this? Did you get a new plug or did you just put loc-tite stuff on the threadin or something?? My oil plug is very oily....

I'm having the same issue, but not losing that much oil. I think I lose more oil when I'm driving in town as opposed to long distance driving. I would see blue smoke in my exhaust whenever I ride my clutch..like getting out of first gear. I did tons of searching and doing the fixing process step by step. I just changed the PCV plug and the blue smoke seemed to go away...for now..~~knockin on wood~~. i did a compression test prior to this and I had good #s..175 on all 4. I went in a shop to do a leak down test to verify, but the shop owner said that it'd be useless and if i got good compression, then it's most likely my oil rings. So now, i'm waiting for my next oil change to see if there's any difference. If there still is, then i'm gonna have to do a minor rebuild, rings, seals, bears...etc. AND do something with the oil plug mentioned above....

There was no oil in my garage or driveway. That's why it was puzzling me. I had to get it checked out. I just bought the new sensor and put it in. Kind of a pain to reach, cause it's in an awkward spot with not a lot of movement. The part I bought was the same size as the factory one, got it from Pep Boys ($6.75). It required a 1&1/16" socket and a 1/2" ratchet with flex head would help greatly. I had to us an adapter with my 3/8" and busted my knuckles up. It was a fairly easy fix and haven't had any oil issues since. It's about in the 5 o'clock position from the oil filter. Hope this helps.

well right now im doing the oil treatment with my car just to double check. when i changed my oil i noticed it was dark black! when i changed my oil i switched to synthetic redline 20w50 and also added STP oil treatment to see if it would help. it seemed to help somewhat... it doesn't smoke as much as before, so im guessing it's working? im going to have my mom follow behind me tomorrow to check.

Thanx a lot. I know exactly where the sensor is, cuz i saw it when i wuz doing my pcv. I'll change the sensor soon. What was different between the sensors anyways that caused one to leak and one not to leak? I haven't really analyzed the sensor itself, but from just looking at it, it seems like it's leakin where it threads in?? Or is it leakin through the sensor itself cuz of various seals that gets torn up over time.....?

It was hard to tell, but I believe it was leaking through the sensor cause the threads were tight and not dirty. The clip that the wire harness connected to was filthy.
