I took off my airbox cover to change the filter and there was what appeared to be oil down in the bottom of the airbox. Would this have come from someone who overfilled the oil? I figured it could have come down from the valve cover hose....... it isn't black or dirty or anything, just there.

Car runs fine in any case except for an extremely rare "hiccup" when I'm sitting at a light.

What car? Dirty road tar not uncommon.

I always wash my airbox when installing a new filter.

99 Q - it's definitely oil - I'd say there was a layer 1/8" deep in there. I'll wash it too and see if it comes back, but the car doesn't use oil between changes. (FYI I just bought the car a month ago so I'm still coming across things). I was just curious how it might have gotten in there

Can't think of any reason why now. I'll contemplate my wife's 2000 later.

My guess is a bunch of road goo just got bunched in there... Just clean it out. Oil wouldnt escape out thru the intake...

last time was in for a oil change they also did the air filter, befor the new air filter was put in, the bottle of motor oil resting on the edge of the air box got knocked over and spilt into the air box; and the m'fer said "f it i will just put the filter in and close the box."Thats IMHO.

The PCV SYSTEM takes air in from the hose after MAF before the TB.

Failure to keep the system clean can result in back flow of valve cover air which might find its way back down the intake creeping along the bottom of air pipe back into MAF.

However the air flow velocity tends to push it back, unless severe blow by from ring wear.

This would show up as oil on output side of filter.

On VH41DE, the air flow is from top to bottom on the filter, opposite the VH45DE bottom to top. I was thinking along those lines, but it would be difficult for fresh unused oil to accumulate there.

How does the feed assembly to the MAF appear? Should be oily also if it ran down from the PCV.

James has the most plausible explanation. Inspect the intake path (check the resonating chambers especially), clean, and report back after you monitor for a few miles.
