ok so i sandblasted my valve cover for my sr20, and tried to blow most of the metallic sand stuff off thinking i got most of it out, but i didn't... theres a little bit of metallic sand particles resting on the top of my motor, will the oil filter be able to filter all that s*** out once it gets to the bottom? or should i put oil in it, start the engine, drive it a little bit then change the oil again?

the sand is magnetic btw!

My buddy did the exact same thing you did. He thought the filter would filter it. It didn't. Good luck to you. I'm not sure how you are going to get it all out.

Either way you're def. gonna need to change the filter. They aren't typically forced to filter out particles and grit that big. I'd change the oil for good measure too though.

Whoa whoa whoa, you sand blasted the valve cover with it on the engine?!?!! WHY??!!

If this is not the case, just clean it really really well before you install it.

If you already installed it, go cry.

But yeah, drive around the block, then change oil and filter. Repeat until there is no crap left in the oil when you drain it.

God damn horrible, try to get as much out with a magnet if you can, How is the glass stuff magnetic? if its glass? If thats the case after you are done trying to get it all out get a power enterprise mag filter and a magnetic drain plug, but holy cow.

I remembered a post about some VW owner trying to sandblast his intake manifold by running the engine and put sand in the intake.

Epic fail, just like what you thinking of right now.

no lol, i am in the middle of a swap right now, and i sand blasted the cover, then washed it off and put it on the motor for temporary, till i got it coated, but turns out i didn't clean it good enough, and a tiny bit of sand fell into the top!

hmm no i don't think its glass it looks metallic, i got the sandblaster from harbor freight, so what ever it comes with, i stuck a magnet in the sand to see if it stuck and it did, so it is magnetic, today i spend hours with like 100 q-tips and an air compressor trying to get out most of the s***, i think i got most of it, but s*** i'll change the oil and filter ones engine is hot.. im using an OEM filter btw!

Prob would but the real question is how powerful of a magnet do you have. Fridge magnet not gonna work. My pops ordered some magnets from a website and they are the strongest i've seen next to an electromagnet. They were so strong if you put them together with out anything in between they will crack each other, from the attraction.

damnit lol, if there is any of this sand s*** in the motor there is VERY little, should i let the car idle till it gets hot and change the oil and filter? or should i drive it for like 10 minutes then change the oil?

Get as much as you possibly can out, leave the valve cover off and use a strong magnet to the cams. Get a Power enterprise MAG oil filter. As well as a magnetic drain plug. This is not something to mess around with.

I would definitely pour a few quarts through the system with the drain plug open. Then after that fill it up run it for 10 minutes then drain it. I would repeat the running and draining for a few times at least. As well as changing the filter. This is an expensive mistake, however it could get more expensive.

While you're at it, stick a bunch of magnets on the ECU. I hear that helps clear any issues that the ECU might be having.

Most auto parts stores and hardware stores carry magnets. I have a nifty extending magnetic wand that I use if I drop bolts/screws/etc.

Next time you crank the motor, get it on vid.

alright guys, thanks for all this input by the way!

ok so i'll go look to see if any auto part stores have the enterprise mag oil filter!

and also check for strong a** magnets!

it just confuses me on how an oil filter isn't able to filter out this s***

I doubt Nissan thought someone would put sand in their engine. You should use masking tape next time so the sand doesn't get inside your valve cover.

Good luck!

The ONLY place youll find that mag filter is online. Power Enterprise is a japanese company and theyll have them at Frsport for example. If youre in that much of a hurry i guess just buy like 3 k & n oil filters and be extra careful. This is a horrible situation.

Put multiple strong a** magnets on the filter and oil pan. and magnetic drain plug and or magnets on the pan and then pull the pan.
