Just wanted to post today (for anyone who might be searching for this down the road) that the Q oil filter needs an 80mm cap type filter wrench...

i changed my oil today in the Q, and try as i might i couldnt get any of our nice array of oil filter wrenches (the strap type) to work.... that cute little metal plate they put there so you dont get oil on your belts really gets in the way...... I went out to NAPA (ripoffs r us) and got one for $4....

Using genuine nissan OEM filters (the 60u00s), and mobil 1 0w40....

no reason posting this, but unless you had some sort of goofy offset strap wrench or something, the cap ones seem to work very easily and effectively!!!!

also wanted to remind you guys of the ATF trick, add 3/4 quart of ATF (m1 syn preferred, i used conventional though) to the engine oil (hot, i drove my car for an hour on the freeway), and let the car idle for 15-30mins (I think i let mine idle for 20 mins, started it up and made a few phone calls), and then drain IMMEDIATELY after turning the car off..... The trick is to drive the car much, preferably not at all.... ATF cant take the kind of temps that regular oil can, so i prefer just to let the car idle..... you wont really be doing any damage per se, you will just really be cancelling out any good things the ATF may do, if it gets too hot youll just turn the ATF into varnish....

Either way, for an extra $2-4 per oil change you can clean your engine effectively and safely with this trick

In addition to that you can use 2-3 oz of ATF(automatic transmission fluid) to a gallon of GAS . It burns hotter and cleans the tip of the fuel injectors. $1.22 a quart at walmart. It works better than any of the off the shelf fuel injector cleaners .

Good old school!Cheers!

As for the oil filter thing, I find it much easier - and faster to remove the air box and just use a grab type wrench to remove and replace the filter. It cut off nearly a 1/2 hour of the entire job.

Love the transmission fluid idea though

ATF has extra detergents in it and its a safe way to really remove your varnish deposits.... ONe thing I noticed is that the oil tends to stain the valve covers and stuff like that.... If you can wipe any residue off with your finger and reveal clean metal, your good to go!!

Anyway, the thing I dont like about other cleaners is they go in and dilute the oil... for 15mins of idling, probably not a big deal... but ATF is basically like oil, just with more detergents.... at idle oil temps, ATF is much like a 10w30, but it cant stay hot long or it starts to turn to varnish...

So for this ATF in the oil trick....Let me make sure I understand the process.

1. You drive your car around and get it hot.2. Come home and add 1/2 quart of ATF3. You let the car idle for 15-20 mins.4. Then you drain the oil immediately.

The extra detergents in the ATF help clean the engine?

You mentioned that if the ATF gets too hot it will turn into varnish. Well you're getting the engine and oil pretty darn hot just by driving it around. Wouldn't it still be hot enough?

I wonder what the difference is between Gunk Motor Flush and ATF. Obviously, they look different. Gunk looks and pours like dark gasoline.

modern motor oil contains more detergents than ATF,this is an old,old school trick back in the days when motor oils didnt contain the powerful detergents that modern oils have today- a waste of time in my book

Having more than a little real technical knowledge in the chemistry and additives of engine and ATF oils--please allow me to share this knowledge.

Modern engine oils are MUCH better at keeping and cleaning up an engine than ATF's. Waste of time and money to put ATF in the crankcase. ATF in the gas tank will destroy the catalyst activity and plug the matrix requiring new cat mufflers.ATF will not clean fuel injectors or intake valves, and will foul the spark plugs with metallic ash.

The ONLY fast engine flush I can support is STP's --because it really works and does not risk damaging costly engine seals like the 'quick varnish solvent' stuff. A badly varnished up engine should be slowly cleaned by adding a pint of Marvel Mystery Oil to the fresh change and 2000 mile changes. Attempting a fast clean up of heavy varnish deposits will cause the varnish layers to 'alligator', crack, and flake off-potentially plugging oil screen and oil passages.

I keep telling folks, buy good fuel, use good oil and filters. Oil is so cheap, while the stuff it protects are so expensive.

After a couple of very frustrating oil changes I bought a pair of oil filter PLIERS at Walmart (about $8, the big long ones with red handles...they have big curved jaws that look like they would be good for delivering babies). Works like a charm...you can grip the filter at an angle and you have plenty of leverage to loosen even a stubborn filter.
