First read this....

Click on the links for the individual filters and examine the data. Tell me which one you use and whether the information presented may cause you to switch to another brand.

Personally, I have used the K&N oil filter for years. It has a 1" nut on the end that makes it easier to pull.

Haven't read this yet, but I have been using OEM on all my cars.

Switching to Mobil 1 filters since OEM's are no longer available in their original configuration...

Nissan OEM, none of that Fram drama.

Just go OEM, its not that much more. Also just buy them in bulk from the infinti partts hookup

Amsoil bypass oil filter and a stock Nissan full flow. Filters down to 1 micron.

My filters go for about $14 each, and that test included, they all have nothing but praise for them (Amsoil).

OEM is not always best.

Wonder how the OEM compares? Wish you could request the tester perform the same test, under the same conditions for additional filters.

I really liked the article for it's objective nature...

Interesting to note the following:

"Since many filter manufacturers contract out their filters, one must be careful that future filters from these vendors are the same as what is presented here. One way to do this is to compare the outside markings of new filters to these pictures."

... I'd love know who now manuf's Nissan "OEM" filters and how they would compare in this lineup. It's a bit disconcerting to realize that filter media and unit construction could change at a whim depending on the supplier. I guess rebadging is the capitalistic way to go but we can suffer the consequences due to inconsistency. This goes for any product not exluding gas and motor oil formulation. I remember reading somewhere that Mobil 1 formulation had changed, not sure if it was for better or worse.

My usage of the K&N brand was influenced by my habit of changing the oil from up above...that nut on the end of the filter really makes things easier for me... They did okay on the survey but Amsoil seems to have taken the prize. Until now, I was mostly concerned with filtration capablity but while we watch microns, we really need to concerned with flow rate too and find a happy medium. Excellent filtration with a lower rate of flow simply means that the flow will also decrease faster than most as the filter catches particles. No sense in sqeaky clean oil when the engine is being starved.

Keep the comments coming on this one...should be interesting.

(and thanks Nchopp)

As long as we're on the subject of oil filters, here's another site to check.

http://people.msoe.edu/~yoderw...1-301

No connection, no interest, etc... Just another oil filter site I found a while ago.

Maybe a good idea, but I just don't think I could put anything with Furd or Motorcrap on the label on my Q

I'm still exhausting my stash of 60U00s - after that I'll start buying M1s from Joe. I'm still bitter about Nissan ditching the 60U00 with the 55Y00. Seeing as how they both sold for the same price point, I assume their manufacturing cost was about the same - so why not keep the good one?!

If they were smart they would have repackaged the 55Y00 as a 60U05 or something, painted it green, and called it "new and improved"

Same here on the VH41DE, but I still have a stash of the OEM filters for the VH45DE.

All thanks to Joe!

The oil bypass filter only bypasses 2 quarts a minute at 30 psi, filtering the oil down to @ 1 micron. There are still 4 quarts or so in the sump. The OEM filter is a full flow that only filters down to 30 micron at 90% efficiency.

Theoretically, you're right on the ball there. But, in actuality, the OEM system is still the primary filtering mechanism, and the bypass just uses a more refined medium to filter down to @ 1 micron. The OEM filter is not bypassed. The engine flows the same volume, pressure and has the same exact flow rate as an OEM unadultered lubrication system, the only difference would be that the oil change intervals are extended to 25K miles, respectively.
