Hello NICO!

Im going to start my oil filter relocation next week, so i went to my auto instructor to give me some advice and he told me not to put the oil filter vertically (the opening of the oil filter is facing down). he said to have it laying on its side or upside down (opening of the oil filter upwards) so that there is no air pocket in the filter.

BUT, when i check on NICO everybody has theirs vertically. So is it okay to have the oil filter vertically?

its ok yeah... but you can mount it sideways if you make a bracket...

do whichever one you prefer, i see them vertically mostly, but your teacher might be right.

( sideways the oil may flow more naturally, rather then accumulating at the bottom )

Interesting question and please forgive the newb questions but...

What about motors that have oil filters mounted to the block that are mounted with the mounting surface down. Does it not matter because there is less air that running a remote filter to fender or other location, but theres air in the system anyway when you do oil changes.

So what then? Also what about when you have a oil catch can? I bought a circuit sports one from enjuku and will be here on Thursday. Wont there be air in that system as well?

i think it would be messier changing the filter if it was mounted verticallyactually i change my mind cause the oil probably drains out of it when its vertical

i used this trick on my fc. take a screwdriver and tap it into the filter. it'll puncture the check valve and let the oil drain out with out making a mess

If you buy the correct oil filter that has an anti-drainback valve, you do not have to worry about the oil draining out between starts. My filter is remote-mounted and horizontal, and I build oil pressure within within .5sec of starting the car.

And I have never considered oil being trapped inside the filter, but it doesn't seem to have been a problem.

Hiding back there in the corner...

Thats how i was originally going to mount the filter slanted like that (so i could clear my hood) but after the talk with my teacher i reconsidered. Im pretty sure im going to go with my original plan. Where is your Oil pressure sensor located DuckyD? near the oil filiter?

Oil pressure sensor is located on the oil block (Tomei oil block) that reads pressure on -IN (from filter back into the block).

Just mount it with the opening up if you can, makes oil changes nice and clean.

ive had mine mounted verticaly with an oil cooler as a daily driven for over a year and have had no problems. after running the car for a while, all u have to do is touch the lines going to and from the oil cooler/relocation kit and if ther hot it is flowing through.

as for the mess, like posted above, i just tap a hole in the top of the filter and that allows all the oil in the filter to drain out when im draining the oil from the oil pan.
