So a few days ago my Blitz turbo timer/boost gauge stopped working (said 0 all thetime, no vacuum or boost). However the car was driving great, boosting well and not smoking at all. Tonight i smell some smoke on the highway, pull over and see that its coming from under the hook. Sure enough, some source near the turbo has sprayed oil all around the engine bay.

Its dark and I can't work on it now, but I can't sleep thinking about it. Any ideas for me? I'm going to take off the turbo tomorrow which should clear things up. But I'm not convinced that the turbo is blown. Can anyone think of a way that oil might be blown around the engine bay?

If the turbo shaft seals went bad, what would the symptoms be?

What other ways do turbos fail? What am I looking for?

Thanks for your ideas.

Check to make sure you weren't leaking oil at the oil feed of the turbo. That'll be the place to look for the source of the oil spray. Only place I can think of where the oil would be subject to high enough pressure to make a spray everywhere. To check out the turbo, check out the housings for the turbo. Oil in the housings = bad news. Turbos can fail in many other ways, like the blades blowing off, shaft play, etc. Not too many other parts you really need to check. Check the shaft and housings for the basics. That'll tell you usually if your turbo's toast or not.

Okay so I pulled the IC pipe off the turbo- no oil in it whatsoever. I did notice that a vacuume hose from a t junction after the wastegate had fallen off. Explains the broken boost gauge. I also noticed that the Dipstick is cracked... its just a flimsey o-ring and a cracked piece of plastic at the top. Could oil have shot up through the top of the dipstick? The only other explination I can think of is that the oil feed or return line from to the turbo is loose/broken. Any thoughts?
