just changed my car oil. checked the dipstick. it read halfway in the middle of the two dots with little less than half quart left in quart number 5. added more went up. ultimately i ended up filling it with all 5 quarts even though the manual says 4 7/8s. every time i check the dipstick i get a different reading. im parked in the same exact spot, which is flat. and havent moved or started the car. 3 outta 5 tries i get around the same which is about 1/8th inch below the top dot on the dipstick. other times above the top dot even into the bend of the dipstick. wtf?

Dipsticks are just crude measurement tools.

Oil will fluctuate in volume depending on the temperature. Capacity is probably given for operating temp.

1/8 or a quart is a very small amount. Just do 5 from now one hehehe.

Wait a sec. Your 2.5 takes 5 quarts of oil?

I don't think my G even takes 5.

the owners manaul states for my motor without oil filter change 4 1/2 quarts, and with oil filter 4 7/8's. i figured out why it was fudging up on the reading. the hump on the dipstick was rubbing against the tube causing it to drip down and mixing with the reading, turning it the other way gave me the right reading. anyway. it still says im a little tiny below the full mark.

remember if you changed the oil filter and did not start the car yet then oil has not filled that area. i would say that there is a good half a quart of room that it takes to fill that. try to start the car, let it warm up, then turn it off and wait a few min so the oil drains back into the oil pan and check again. finally a side note i put 4.8 quarts in my 3.5 V6 (VQ35DE) so check the manual again

maybe i oughta explain better. my first post i had moved the car off the ramps and took a 5 minute drive. then parked it and thats where it sat for a long time when i checked the oil. at this point it is in between the 2 dots which is safe. it is about 1/8inch below the full dot. I dont really know. And what i typed was straight from the manual. So it would actually take 5+ quarts...i dont really know why. unless the quarts were short filled for some reason. didnt look like it but i didnt check them.
