It's for the oil that's sprayed out of your crankcase ventiation port. Under high boost situtations (and others as well) too much pressure can build up in the crankcase, and it lets the air out through this port in the valve cover. Unfortunately, some oil just sucked out as well. The tube is usually run back into the intake, therefore you get oil gooing up your throttle body, intake manifold, plugging the intercooler and reducing the power potential of the engine. By having an oil catch can, any oil that gets sprayed out gets caught by the can for later use, and only air gets into the intake tube, keeping the engine much cleaner and running better as well.

It's not necessary at all really. It's just a "nice to have" item.

A lot of people just run tiny K&N filters on their crankcase vent. They're only $10 or $20 as opposed to the $100 for a oil catch can. They just let the air escape to the atmosphere, but can sometimes spray oil all over your hood and engine bay. :thumbd
