I encourage you guys to keep an eye on your dipstick especially on the VK45 engines. I have been monitoring the oil level on my M45 and have realized its been consuming more than half a quart of oil in less than 1000 miles. First hint that gives away oil consumption is a puff of blue smoke on start ups after it's been sat overnight. Not normal on a car with 28,000 miles on it.

I have read numerous post on the G35 forums of owners getting their engines replaced because of oil consumption issues and Infiniti has released a TSB regarding the problem. Also read owners of FX's were curious on how much consumption would be considered normal. Seems like they are starting to get affected.

The point is to keep an eye on your oil before anything big happens causing headaches. If your worried, the dealer will perform a oil consumption test after 1000 miles from a oil change.

That is sage advice for any car owner of any model.

Please be advised that most Technical Service Bulletins are VIN specific, as is the case with the above mentioned TSB. That only applies to G35s with a 6 speed transmission. This drivetrain and yours are very different., oil consumption is not a wide spread issue with any year M45, it is known that they consume some oil and if it is deemed to be excessive the engine is usually replaced. The amount of M45s with excessive oil consumption is not as wide spread than the issue with the early HRs.

Infiniti is not the only company that acknowledges some consumption in V8s is not an issue. Observe almost any MB or BMW V8 or V12 when they start-up from a cold soak and they buff a good amount of blue smoke. There is a specific process the dealer needs to be performed in order to deem an engine is faulty.

Most definitely!

I check half-way between oil changes ... seem to drop about 1/4 to 1/3 qt (occasionally, but rarely, 1/2 qt) every 1750 miles.

That is, of course, an estimate based on how much I need to add to get it back "above" the mid-point mark.

And, as always, I measure oil level in the morning with a stone-cold engine, level ground inside my garage, etc. ... to get a consistent measurement from one time to the next!
