Has anyone noticed even a slight amount of oil consumption? I change my oil every 2500 miles, and I just passed 16,000 miles. I checked the oil today (2400 miles since last oil change) and the level is right up to the top hole just below the full mark. I know this is a trivial amount of oil loss, but naturally, I'm curious to see if anyone else has seen this. Supposedly, oil consumption in a modern vehicle is acceptable as long as it's less than 1 quart every 1,000 miles.

Could this be due to the amount of oil that's in the filter? I just changed the V's oil for the first time last weekend, but I'll keep an eye out on the oil level until the next change.

well, for all cars, it IS natural for cars to consume oil from time to time. From what i'm hearing it from ur story, it doesnt seem like a seriuos problem. Engine oil travels all around the engine and when they return to the oilpain, some oil may have been burnt or just slimed inside the engine.

What oil are you using anyway?

Sorry to revive the old thread, but I am wondering if anyone else is starting to see Oil Consumption to the tune of 1/2 to 3/4 a quart every 3000 miles or so. My V now has 25K miles, have always used Synth oil, and change it every 6000 miles. I check it myself every 3000 miles and the amount it is using seems excessive. The dealer wasn't too concerned and said to just bring it back in 6000 miles, which I'm wondering wasn't a way to get me close to my warranty expiration. I've been unable to find anything that says what is 'normal' consumption.

Any assistance, advice, etc, is greatly welcome.

I am curious about what brand of Synthetic you are using.

I am breaking in a Versa and a Rogue on Amsoil full Synthetic 5W-30. The Rogue has 3500 miles on it and the Versa about 1500. Neither has shown what I would call excessive comsumption for new engines breaking in. Maybe a quarter of a quart in 3000 miles.

I have also been looking very closely at any potential seal leak points and seen no sign of leakage at all. All this despite being told by the dealer only to use a Castrol Synthetic "blend".

By the way, I am an Amsoil dealer and have had many customers and some family members break in engines on full synthetic oils. The break-ins take a little longer, but the eventual results have been excellent.

It is my understanding that a new engine should not be switched over to synthetic oil until 10k miles or so to allow the engine to break in properly. Most important is the seating of the rings. I am not sure as to what the vehicle manufacture recommendation is though.

I've been using Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 5w-30 since about 7500 miles. No signs of leaks or excess smoke from the tailpipe, the best I can tell.

Many, many cars come from the factory with synthetic as factory fill.

There is no disclaimer in owners manuals suggesting not using synthetic until a certain period of time.

You can use synthetic in your car from zero miles. You do not need to "break it in" with standard oil.

Here is a good read regarding engine break in procedures:

http://www.mototuneusa.com/break_in_secrets.htm

This was taken from a PRO synthetic AMSOIL site:

Changing to AMSOIL Engine Oil

New Engine: Break in the engine with petroleum oil for about 6,000 miles. Drain the oil; replace the filter with an AMSOIL synthetic-rated filter and fill with AMSOIL.

Say what you will, but I will not run synthetic in any new engine until 10K miles.

From the Mobil 1 website...

Quote »Myth: You should break in your engine with conventional oil, then switch to a synthetic oil like Mobil 1.

Reality: You can start using Mobil 1® in new vehicles at any time, even in brand new vehicles. In fact, Mobil 1 is original equipment (it is installed at the factory) in: Mobil 1 is factory fill in:

* Acura RDX * Aston Martin * All Bentley Vehicles * Cadillac CTS, CTS-V, Escalade, XLR, XLR-V, SRX and STS and STS-V * Chevrolet Corvette C6 and Z06 * Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS * Chrysler 300C SRT-8 * Cobalt SS S/C Coupe * Dodge Caliber SRT-4, Charger SRT-8, and Magnum SRT-8 * Jeep Cherokee SRT-8 * Mercedes-Benz AMG Vehicles * Mercedes SLR * Mitsubishi Evolution * Pontiac Solstice GXP * All Porsche Vehicles * Saturn Ion Red Line and Saturn Sky Red Line * Viper SRT-10

One of the myths surrounding synthetic oils is that new engines require a break-in period with conventional oil. The fact is, current engine manufacturing technology does not require this break-in period. As indicated by the decisions of the engineers who design the high-performance cars listed above, Mobil 1 can be used starting the day you drive the car off the showroom floor.[/quote]I'm not trying to start an argument - but - I'll put my trust in both a) the car manufacturers themselves and b) the synthetic oil pioneers. Yes, I know that Amsoil actually came to market with a synthetic motor oil prior to Mobil 1, but why they insist that an engine must be broken in with conventional oil - when Mobil 1 is factory fill on a huge list of performance and mainstream vehicles - is beyond me.

The oil consumption was an error on my part... the car hasn't lost a drop since.
